Dunn Was Born With It! Maybelline Announces Jourdan Dunn As New Brand Ambassador

A few weeks ago, we were excited to announce that Lupita Nyong’o becoming  the brand ambassadress for Lancome cosmetics. Today, we are pleased to share that the exquisite Jourdan Dunn will be the new face of Maybelline. The British single mother turned supermodel is known for her editorial spreads, pronounced runway walk and cooking show on Jay Z’s site Life +Times. Dunn was also featured in Beyonce’s “Yonce” video.

“Jourdan’s look, style and positive energy are perfect for the Maybelline New York brand. She truly reflects Maybelline’s vision of global beauty,” Maybelline’s brand president Jerome Bruhat says.

In a statement released to Vogue UK, Jourdan Dunn said of her accomplishment, “It is an honor to be a spokesperson for such an iconic brand. I am proud to say that I am a Maybelline girl and hopefully I can make people feel the same way I did when I saw the advertisements growing up. The brand imagery is always beautiful and positive. To now be a part of that is a dream come true!”

Dunn’s first job assignment for the legendary brand will be its Go Extreme mascara, that arrived in department stores this month. Dunn also has contracts with Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein, Burberry Beauty and DKNY, to briefly describe her resume.

She’s killing the game one fashion and cosmetic house at a time. Black beauty is well on its way to change the fashion industry’s uniform look and that’s both a blessing and what the marketplace is calling for.

This cover caused quite the controversy last month did it not?

People from all walks of life who had an appreciation for the magazine were talking about cancelling their subscription, and even Naomi Campbell had a little bit of shade to throw about earning the chance to be on the cover as a supermodel. But as always, controversy can be a good thing when it comes to the dollar.

According to The New York Post, media sources say that the Kimye cover is on track to sell almost 400,000 copies. The Post says that it will surpass the sales of Beyoncé’s popular March 2013 cover (355,000) and Michelle Obama’s April 2013 cover, which sold almost 300,000 copies and was loved by many.

But what is Vogue saying about the sales? Are they having the “last laugh” as some would say? Actually, they’re not saying anything:

“[We] never comment on sales figures.”

But when the Kimye cover dropped, it wasn’t a spokesperson, but the magazine’s editor-in-chief, who commented on all the criticism and rumors that Kanye West begged like no other to get his lady on the cover. Anna Wintour said that the cover was actually her idea:

“As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue’s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”

If it was her idea, I’m sure she’s somewhere flipping her signature bob back and forth in private because her plan worked. Touché, Anna. Touché.

There have been plenty of mixed reactions put out there about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West covering Vogue magazine’s April issue, and even celebrities aren’t holding back their opinions. Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar wanted to cancel her subscription after seeing the cover (“Well……I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???”), and Shahs of Sunset star Reza Farahan told TMZ that he thinks West paid Vogue off to get his lady on the cover. But one person who has been on the cover of Vogue and had an interesting point to make of it all, is Naomi Campbell. In an interview with “The Morning Show” in Australia this morning, she was asked her opinion about the cover. Campbell shared her thoughts in a “politically correct” manner without bashing the magazine and her friend, Anna Wintour, but still managed to give a side-eye to the whole thing:


Kylie Gillies: “What do you think of Kim and Kanye’s US Vogue cover, given that you’ve been on the cover yourself countless times?”

Naomi Campbell: “I do not want to comment [laughs].”

Gillies: “Why?”
Campbell: “Because I’m a fashion model and I’ve been working for 28 years.  And when you get a Vogue cover, it’s a build in your career.  It’s a stepping stone to achieve that. I’m a fashion model, so, what more can I say?”

Gillies: “So you think Kim and Kanye haven’t earned the right to be on the cover of Vogue?”

Campbell: “Those are your words, I’m being politically correct.  That’s Anna Wintour’s choice to put them on the cover of her magazine, who’s to question it?”

Wintour, who is the editor-in-chief of the famed magazine (and reportedly the inspiration behind The Devil Wears Prada), responded to the controversy on Friday.

“As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancee on Vogue‘s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”

There you have it. The opinion of one of the more elite fashion models of all time, and the response from the woman behind the biggest fashion magazine on the planet. What do you think of Campbell’s “politically correct” statements on the cover?

Pardon me for starting off this post so cliche but has any other image in recent memory proven the phrase “a picture says a thousand words” so much as this one?

All day people have been going ham on the spread inside Vogue’s latest issue which features Kanye and Kim on the cover, but the photo that’s single-handedly threatened to break the Internet is this Vogue North West Kimye selfie pic, which no one can deny captures this couple’s true essence.

I believe writer Matt Novak said it best when he wrote: “This photo is going to be taught in every media studies course of the next 100 years.”

That’s exactly the sentiment I had when I looked at this shot, and that thought was quickly followed by another, which was: And I bet Kanye and Kim don’t even get it.

Caption this pic and tell us what — if anything — you think was going through the West family’s head when they were asked to take this photo. Are they still playing the media and consumers or are they getting played this time around?

Kanye has been on a campaign to get his fiancée, Kim Kardashian, on the cover of Vogue for as long as we can remember. And as we previously reported today, he can now rest because his dream has finally come true. Of course, we all know how bad Kanye wanted that Vogue cover, so it’s not surprising that rumors about him begging the fashion magazine’s EIC, Anna Wintour, for the cover are resurfacing. However, according to Daily Mail, Anna says those rumors are completely false.

“Part of the pleasure of editing Vogue, one that lies in a long tradition of this magazine, is being able to feature those who define the culture at any given moment, who stir things up, whose presence in the world shapes the way it looks and influences the way we see it,” Anna writes in the issue’s Letter From The Editor. “I think we can all agree on the fact that that role is currently being played by Kim and Kanye to a T. (Or perhaps that should be to a K?)”

Though she admits that the gossip probably makes the issue more enjoyable for the reader, she affirms that Kanye did not beg for the cover.

“As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancée on Vogue’s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”

Her letter continues:

“There’s barely a strand of the modern media that the Kardashian Wests haven’t been able to master, and for good reason: Kanye is an amazing performer and cultural provocateur, while Kim, through her strength of character, has created a place for herself in the glare of the world’s spotlight, and it takes real guts to do that.”

We thought we’d never see the day but it looks like Kanye’s campaign has proven successful. He’s been petitioning Vogue editor Anna Wintour for months trying to get Kim Kardashian on the cover. Mama we made it! The couple are on the April cover, the shape issue of Vogue magazine! The iconic book once again tapped famed photographer Annie Leibovitz to capture the beautiful couple. Kim is the stand out, posing in front of her man in a wedding dress while Kanye takes the backseat.

The cover is nice but let’s be real, we’re most excited about Baby North featured on the pages. Check out the picture of the little one on the next page. There’s also a video including the other pictures from the upcoming spread.

Trill indeed Ye. We didn’t think it would ever happen but honestly it makes a whole lot of business sense. People who love and hate Kim will but this issue and who can deny North’s cuteness. Smart move.

Far From Home But Closer To Her Goal, Candace Stewart Forges A Fashionable Path In Media

Perhaps more important than achieving a successful career are the steps you take to build one. Candace Marie Stewart is stepping lively, in pumps, which you can find her wearing with a refreshingly attainable mix of mass market, vintage, indie, and designer labels on her blog MarieMAG.

With each styled ensemble and attendant affirmation, Stewart champions the “every girl” with an eye for Fendi on a Forever 21 budget.

The 26-year-old blogger, whose style has caught the eyes of street style photogs from Glamour to Face Hunter, is well cast as a fashion heroine. At 22, the Central University of Arkansas finance major left home for New York, though her parents wanted her to stay local. She snagged an internship in Vogue’s accessories department, and put in 13-hour days at the magazine while working towards her Marketing MBA at Seton Hall University. Today, she serves as executive assistant to the publisher of People magazine and’s Fashion Closet editor.

“My message is simple,” she writes in the description of a video teaser about her continuing climb. “If you have a dream, goal or ambition, strive for it… I moved to New York because I have a goal. Have I fully accomplished that goal? Not at all, but I am definitely a lot closer.”

We asked the enterprising fashionphile what it took to follow her passions more than a thousand miles from home, and got her thoughts on what Lupita Nyong’o could mean for diversity in fashion and mainstream media.

MadameNoire: Your family wasn’t keen on you leaving Arkansas to pursue a fashion career in New York. What path did they want you to take?

Candace Stewart: My parents started a church, Agape, when I was two years old and have been working there ever since. My parents would have preferred me to work in the church and help with the ministry.  I personally felt that working in the church was their mission in life and not necessarily mine.

MN: What were your parents wrong — and right — about as far as you starting a new life in New York?

CS: My parents were right about the fashion industry being hard and that I did not know anyone when I moved here. However, they were wrong in saying that I eventually would come back home. What they didn’t see was that I had tenacity and faith that would help me when times got tough, and to pursue my dreams no matter the cost.

MN: Speaking of dreams, how did you get the internship at Vogue?

CS: I got the gig by simply applying through the website, but I made sure to check the website every day so that I would be one of the first to apply.

MN: What’s the biggest misconception about Vogue and Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour?

CS: I had several interactions with Anna Wintour throughout the hallways and even [ran] a couple of errands for her. …People portray her as the “devil,” but I just view it as sexism. If she [were] a man, no one would have anything to say, and would have nothing but admiration and praise for her. However, as a society we still struggle with women in power.

MN: You had a non-stop schedule working at Vogue and getting your MBA. What’s your advice for maintaining balance while building a career?

CS: Make time for yourself and make sure to rest. It’s really easy to get caught up with getting ahead and thinking about the next thing, but that will drive you crazy. Whether you have to take out an hour to go for a walk or do something as simple as treating yourself to a manicure, taking that time out for yourself will give you time to breathe. My most creative moments come after I’m well rested.

In the March issue of Vogue, which will be Rihanna’s third cover for the American version of the magazine since her first in 2011, writer Plum Sykes chats with the mega-star about fashion, her talent, and why she flocks to Instagram so much. The interview is a very colorful one, as Skyes meets up with the singer to be styled by her at the Alexander Wang boutique in NYC. In between trying on capes and men’s leather bombers, we get to read Rihanna being herself–honest and silly (in a good way):

On Her 11 Million Instagram Followers:

“Instagram is my way of communicating to the world,” she says. “When I’m on tour, I keep fans in the loop. I don’t really think about it too much. Literally, I can be sitting in a car and be bored, so I do a selfie just because I’m bored. Or if my dog is running around in circles and I think that’s funny, I put it on Instagram.” As for who Rihanna follows on Instagram? “I follow girls from the Middle East. It gives you ideas.”

She Thinks Fashion Sense Is A Big Part Of Her Success–Not Really Her Voice:

“It’s not all down to my voice. There’s people with way more talent than I when it comes to singing. Bigger voices. But people want to know who you are. Fashion is a clear indication, a way to express your attitude, your mood.”

Ri Ri On Her Ever-Changing Hair And Her Love Of Weaves:

“It’s not my hair, but the girl who donated it, she’s the bomb,” says Rihanna. “Black girls never let anyone see this,” she adds, pulling apart the locks at the back of her head to show me the intricate workings of the false hair, which is woven into a net attached to her own. “I have two main hair people I work with. They’re always with me. I’m like, ‘I’m bored! I wanna change my hair!’ That’s the good thing about a weave. You can do whatever with it.”

Going Against What Folks Consider “Normal”:

“I don’t go out of my way to be a rebel or to have that perception, but a lot of the decisions I make, a lot of the direction I want to move, is against the grain, or against society’s tight lane, and I’m aware of that sometimes. It might not be fitting with the norm, but that’s OK for me.”

Strike A Pose: Miley Cyrus Channels Madonna

Miley Cyrus channels Madonna on the latest cover of Vogue Germany.  The singer lets her body “go with the flow” again rocking lingerie, leather, fishnet stockings and a bold red lip matching an even bolder display of her body parts.  Photographer Mario Testino is behind the provocative images that display a topless Cyrus.

Ever since she twerked across the MTV Video Music Awards stage last year Miley has gotten mighty comfortable with nudity.  The 21-year old recently posed completely naked for an issue of W magazine and swung across the screen in the buff in her video for “Wrecking Ball”.  And while the pictures are tastefully sexy, we have to wonder if Miley is bringing much else to the table but being barely dressed.  The pop star straddles between famous images of Madonna and other iconic blonde bombshell, Marilyn Monroe. Satirical newspaper, The Onion called the images, “powerfully original”.  It’s a concept that’s been there, done that and come back with the troubled teen stars to prove it. Lindsay Lohan did a similar tribute to Marilyn Monroe in 2008 for New York Magazine.

The overkill of Miley Cyrus’s mission to bring sexy back is little a disappointing, since it’s such a distraction from the fact that she’s actually talented.  Cyrus’s voice is pretty impressive when she’s actually focusing on singing and not being naked.  If she keeps up this behavior we don’t know what we’ll be sick of seeing first: her twerking or her tongue.

Just days after Vogue celebrated 121 years of existence, they debut their January 2014 issue with Cate Blanchett as the cover girl. The “fashion bible” came from humble beginnings as a weekly publication founded by Arthur Turnure to an internationally recognized publication in a dozen editions.

Fast forward to today where, in addition to celebrating another year, the Conde Nast publication made their “Ten Rising Style Stars of 2014″ list– that has us talking in the office. Among the expected names of Gia Copolla, Kiernan Shipka and Pixie Geldof were three stars native to Styleblazer: Lupita Nyong’o, Ciara and Iggy Azalea.
