There’s a reason people are hesitant to get involved when drama pops off: Whenever you try to intervene, you end up catching the blame for something.
A Cobb Community Transit driver who was stabbed in the process of trying to stop a fight on his bus has been suspended for not following protocol during the altercation. Instead of trying to diffuse the situation when 21-year-old Taniesha Nicole Twyne allegedly got into an argument over a cell phone with another passenger, Damian Haney should have stayed in his seat and called CCT dispatch, which would have called 911, CCT Spokeswoman AikWah Leow told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. Since he didn’t do that, he’s been suspended with pay.
The incident started when Twyne borrowed a male passenger’s cell phone and allegedly refused to return it after an argument broke out. According to police, when the bus driver intervened she first pulled out a knife which other passengers took from her. Then the woman allegedly grabbed a pen from Haney’s shirt pocket and stabbed him repeatedly in the face.
Somehow Twyne was subdued until police arrived and arrested her on a charge of aggravated battery while the driver was treated at a hospital in Marietta, GA, and later released. The Atlanta Journal wasn’t able to get in touch with Haney or Veolia Transportation, the company that provides drivers for the CCT system, but Leow stated that “in the last 10 years, no incident of this kind has happened.”
I wonder what would have happened if the driver or the passengers hadn’t intervened and someone else got hurt.
What would you do in this situation? Do you think the driver should have been punished for not following protocol?
