If you know even just a little bit about Twitter, you know a big part of the social media titan’s appeal is in its trending topics. A lot of them can be hilarious, cute, informative and sometimes even redeeming (remember the #SorryJesus topic a few week’s back?). But lately, I’ve noticed an ugly, hateful and just straight up, “IGNANT” tone showing up in the trending topics on the site. Many have been sexist, as well as racist, and that’s not cool. I’m sure you’ve seen your share of ratchetness on there while trying to explain a highlight of your day in 140 characters or less, and I want to share the ones I’ve found with you. Be sure to read the titles slowly so you don’t get confused.

If you’re a Twitter bird you may have noticed that trending topics consistently pertain to black people. In fact, a Pew Study confirmed that African Americans are disproportionally more likely to use the social networking site than any other racial segment of the population. Hmm. Interesting, indeed. So this morning there was yet another black trending topic: #whenblackpeoplegetpaid. For those of you who don’t get down with stereotypes you can stop reading right…about…now. Those of you who find the occasional stereotype to be quite comical, feel free to indulge.

It was with this trending topic in mind that I, with the help of my friends, was inspired to create the black woman equivalent. So without further delay, #whenblackwomengetpaid…

People love to say ‘it’s just Twitter’ when speaking about some of the ridiculous things that take place on the popular social networking site. However, we must remember that those are actual people behind the computer and cell phone screen. Thus, what happens on the internet is a reflection of those who are making it happen.

That said…what the hell is wrong with the people who have made #rapistsongs a national trending topic?
