This was a great weekend for actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Not only did his new action flick San Andreas top the box office, it was also his biggest box office take as the lead actor.
According to Warner Bros., the film took in $53.2 million for its opening weekend at 3,777 locations — and 51 percent of the ticket buyers were women. It was the star himself that was the major draw for all moviegoers. “A majority of those shelling out for San Andreas showed up for The Rock at 38 percent, while 34 percent came out because they adore disaster films,” reports Deadline.
Warner Bros. distribution chief Dan Fellman said, “Dwayne Johnson is a major movie star and he’s really coming into his own at the moment and we just happen to have him at the right time. San Andreas is his biggest opening as a solo star, and the film is from original material.”
The box office take for Friday for San Andreas beat the first days and weekends of previous Rock hit films, The Scorpion King ($12.6M Friday/$36.1M FSS), Hercules ($11.05M/$29.8M FSS), and G.I. Joe Retaliation ($15.3M Friday/$40.5M FSS).

When he’s not ducking threats from Breezy for taking selfies with Karrueche, model turned Chocolate City actor Tyson Beckford is doing a residency for Chippendales in Las Vegas. And we support that 100%. Hence, we’ve come up with a list of 15 celeb men who need to ditch shirts forever and bless that Chippendales stage.
Move over Kim Kardashian. When it comes to selfies, it seems Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has you beat. And he did it all in one day–in three minutes to be exact.
The Rock recently set a world record for the most selfies taken in 3 minutes. He did so at his “San Andreas” movie premiere in London on May 22. And the record is official.
We just set a NEW GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for most self portraits (selfies) taken in record time (yup, a selfie world record exists and your arm gets a helluva workout). WORLD PREMIERE of SAN ANDREAS and rewriting the record books all in one night. #MicDropBoom #NewSelfieKing #LONDON #SanAndreasWorldTour MAY 29th.
Don’t go thinking this was a spontaneous event. Johnson was all prepared for it and planned out his strategy. In fact, Johnson was closely monitored throughout the process by Guinness World Records adjudicator Mark McKinley, who ensured that Johnson’s full face and neck were visible in each pic and that all of the images were in focus, reports The New York Daily News.
So there you have it–The Rock is king of selfies.
Hollywood is also hoping he’s the kind of the box office. This Memorial Day weekend was a sluggish one. The four-day weekend receipts were down 15 percent from last year. George Clooney’s Tomorrowland topped the rankings, but with $41.7 million, it was a soft debut that has got some people worried. However, there are summer popcorn movies — San Andreas, Magic Mike XXL and Jurassic World among them — still to come.
When most of us entered the real world, we had to trade in our midriff-baring tops and miniskirts for neutral-colored (re: dull) power suits. We (hopefully) gave up our bad boy lovers for grown men who had their act together! After all, it is all a part of growing up. But, no matter how “grown” you are, you can always appreciate the bad boy look! Take a look at some of the sexiest famous men around who have the hottest tattoos! We’re not saying these heartthrobs are bad dudes, but they have an extra bit of edge that we can’t help but swoon over!
Are you surprised? You must have forgotten that “The Rock” graced the silver screen with two kick-butt films: Fast & Furious 6 and G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Along with two other small movies, Dwayne Johnson drew in $1.3 billion at the box office, Forbes reports.
You would think Robert Downey, Jr. would have topped the list. After all, Iron 3 is this year’s highest grossing film. But that was also Downey’s only movie in 2013. Because of Johnson worked harder this year by starring in three additional films, “The Rock” wrestled him out of the No.1 spot.
Fast & Furious 6 alone pulled in $789 million in the global box office. The widely-popular movie franchise also helped Johnson’s co-stars — Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker — land a spot on Forbes‘ list in fourth and sixth place, respectively.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation reeled in $376 billion worldwide. Pain & Gain, alongside Mark Wahlberg, is Johnson’s third highest-grossing film this year with an $86 million box office draw.
Snitch, Johnson’s crime drama film, didn’t really appeal to audiences as it only nabbed $58 million at the box office. As for Empire State, an action film starring Liam Hemsworth — Miley Cyrus’ former lover — the movie went straight to DVD and Blu-Ray in September.
Along with scoring box office gold for riding around in fast cars, Diesel drew in $887 million for his work in Riddick, a sci-fi film.
After “The Rock” stands, of course, Robert Downey, Jr. in second place. Steve Carell, best known for his TV antics on The Office, brought home some big numbers with Despicable Me 2, The Way Way Back, and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The only woman on the list, Sandra Bullock, rounds out the top five with Gravity and The Heat.
When you stop and think about it, most of us, if not all of us living and breathing right now, have a lot to be thankful for. Be thankful for your family, your friends, your job, your health, the roof over your head, and more. And if that’s not enough, you’re about to be very thankful for Instagram and the selfie, because we’re thankful for fine celebrity men who don’t have a problem sharing what they’re working with, with their fans using both of those things. Here are some hard and fine bodies we’re thankful to have seen this year thanks to social media!
We see Essence trying to switch the style up! They’re breaking out the sexiest men for their August issue and we are NOT mad especially when they have men as fine as The Rock on the cover. We already loved The Rock (aka Dewayne) but his quote about how he takes care of a woman makes us absolutely swoon.
“…When I say I’m going to take care of a woman, I don’t just mean physically or sexually or romantically. I’m going to take care of her emotionally and spiritually. I’m going to take care of her in all ways. I take a lot of pride in that today”
For the upcoming issue nearly 4,000 Essence readers voted on who they thought the finest men were. So be sure to grab a copy and see if your favorite cuties made the cut!
I’m sure I’m not the only person who has no idea what the movie Pain and Gain is about starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Anthony Mackie, but has an outrageous urge to run to the movie theater to see it the minute it comes out this week. Why? Because of The Rock of course. Since he signed on for this movie, that man has gotten bigger in muscle mass, grown a very alluring mustache and beard combination and is nice and tan all of a sudden, and I’m not sure about you, but it’s doing something for me. So much so that I felt the need to do another Evening Eye Candy slideshow for the brotha, who was one of the first pieces of candy we showed off back in 2011. And if this slideshow isn’t enough for you, I’d encourage you to do like me (his new stan) and become a follower of his new Instagram page, @therock. You won’t be disappointed!
Doppleganger Alert: Rita Ora Nabs “Fast And Furious 6” Role That Was Originally Intended For Rihanna
First of all: Why is there about to be ANOTHER Fast And Furious movie? We get the gist of the whole movie series by now, so can we let it go already?
And second of all: Who knew Rita Ora could act?
To be honest with you, I don’t know a great deal about Ora like that, aside from the fact that she dresses a mix of tomboy meets colorful and quirky, and that Roc Nation really, really, REALLY wants us to like her and make her the next Rihanna. Seriously, we see her everywhere, but are they really even pushing her music like that? I can’t name more than like two of her tracks like that, but I guess it’s all about creating a brand. Well, with news that she has won a role in the next Fast and Furious movie that Rihanna was originally set to star in, those comparisons between Ri Ri and Rita probably won’t go away any time soon.
Earlier in the year it was reported that Rihanna would play a villain in the newest installment of the popular film series, as people behind Fast and Furious were impressed with Ri Ri’s work in Battleship. But as it turned out, a lot of people are feeling Rihanna on the acting tip in general, because, according to The Sun, a busy schedule, including upcoming voice work on an animated film, caused scheduling conflicts and Rihanna had to back out of Fast and Furious 6. When she did, up stepped Ora who auditioned for the movie, and according to the Daily Mail, had previous acting experience (was it from that Drake video, “Over”?) and wowed casting folks during her auditions. A source told The Sun that “They loved her look and her attitude.”
Though there has been some talk that Rita has been swaggerjacking Rihanna’s steelo (yeah, I took it back) for a while now, the few times I’ve seen these two women together in public, Rihanna seems to have embraced her (possibly because she doesn’t see her as competition, but hey, she might just really like the chick). But I can’t help but wonder what she’s thinking now that Ora will be groomed for a role she way going to have. Especially one that puts a sistah so close to fine a** Paul Walker and The Rock! Either way, I know Jay-Z is somewhere doing the “Big Pimpin'” dance because they’re making him some good money!
As the next Presidential election draws nigh in November, the two most popular candidates, Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney have been paving the campaign trail. With election year comes slander, controversy and your occasional celebrity political rants. Politics met entertainment with the latest celebrity rant, coming from Nicki Minaj, in which she rapped in vote of Republican Mitt Romney. This was a shock to fans and celebrity bloggers everywhere, but Nicki is not the only popular African-American face that has shown favor to the GOP. Here is a list of some African-American celebrities who have supported or are affiliated with the Republican party:
LL Cool J
LL Cool J attended the Republican Convention in 2004 and has been a supporter of Republican New York governor George Pataki back in 2002. He has never officially stated his political party.
