If you’ve ever been curious about what happened to Duck, Choir Boy, J.T., Eddie and Dresser after the conclusion of The Five Heartbeats, it looks like you’ll finally get a chance to find out. Actor and producer Robert Townsend recently confirmed that he is in the process of putting together a sequel for the popular 1991 drama.

“I am working on a sequel. Next year I’ll be making an announcement,” the former Parent Hood actor told Black America Web.

So far not many details about the upcoming sequel have been released, but our guess is that fans will be pretty receptive. In 2011, the film’s all-star cast reunited on the BET Awards show stage for an awesome performance and they seemed pretty stoked about it.

“You know, I thought tonight, from my point of view, it was incredible. It was great to have everyone together. To think twenty years ago that we started something and it continued and there’s an audience still in love with the film,” Robert Townsend told NecoleBitchie on the night of the performance.

“And I think the biggest thing for us tonight is that we got all of the dance steps,” he continued.

“You know, it’s just a great moment for all of us,” added Leon. “Michael said this earlier, ‘You make movies that hopefully people will remember.’ Memorable performances and memorable movies is what this is all about and memorable songs.”

So are you looking forward to this sequel?

Where did the story come from?

Though the story was based on several R&B groups and solo artists, including The Temptations, The Dells, Frankie Lymon and Sam Cooke, Robert Townsend told Black Voices that the breakup of The Temptations when he was a child, inspired the story. “I grew up with a lot of the singing groups from the ’60s, such as The Temptations, The Dells and The O’Jays. I always loved music. When The Temptations broke up, I took it personally. [The Five Heartbeats] came out of that.”

Michael Wright will always and forever be Eddie Kane from “The Five Heartbeats” in my mind, and from his antics Sunday morning they may have a little somethin’ somethin’ in common. According to TMZ, the actor was arrested in New York City for driving while intoxicated — after he ran into a police car.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Wright — who starred in the classic movie “The Five Heartbeats” — was trying to park his 1978 black Rolls Royce in Manhattan when he hit the car that had two officers sitting inside.

We’re told the officers went to have a word with Wright and detected an odor of alcohol on his breath. After the field sobriety test didn’t go Wright’s way, the officers arrested him.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ Wright’s blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit.

We’re told both officers were taken to a local hospital to be checked out after the accident.

I wonder if when cops were booking Michael he turned to the camera for his mugshot and went “Diiiiiiinnng”

On a serious note though, I’m going to need him to catch a cab like everyone else in New York City.
