Drop The Flat Iron Like It’s Hot: Summer Hairstyles To Help You Beat the Heat
It is finally summer and with that radiant sun shining bright, those heat-induced hairstyles are not always the best for the sweaty days of summer. The humidity can have your hair puffed up and turned out, and besides, excessive heat on your hair from curling and flat ironing is never a good idea anyway. Here are four alternatives that will help you to back away from the blow dryer, put the flat iron down and save your hair for summer.
1. The Bun ‘do
I absolutely love a good bun ‘do. It can be sleek and sophisticated or flirty and playful. In the summertime, when the heat and humidity may do a number on your hair and make the frizz stand at attention, simply tie a folded head scarf around your head to hold your hair down and add a splash of style.
2. Set Your Hair
Rather than using direct heat to straighten your hair, you can roller set it under the dryer. YouTube offers a ton of tutorials on how to roller set a bevvy of hair textures from relaxed to natural. Alternatively, you can skip the heat all together and roller set your hair with flexi rods to create lush curls. Simply flat twisting your hair down and roller setting the ends will give you big curly hair you are looking for in the morning.
3. Roll, tuck & pin.
Break those bobby pins out and get creative. Day-old curls can be pinned up into new fresh styles. Swoop it to the side or pin the back up for fun retro looks. Go all out and pin your hair up into a mohawk, it’s all about how creative you can get with the bobby pins. Plus, here’s another time where the headband can help to smooth down a look and add a splash of style.
4. Yarn braids
Don’t run away because you don’t know how to braid extensions into your hair. Using yarn is an easy alternative that allows for a better grip than synthetic or human hair and allows the hair braiding novice to complete a look that’s super chic for the summertime. You can braid or twist the yarn into your hair to create long braids that are just in time for the summer. A protective style that’s fly!

There are so many amazing accessories you can rock throughout the year, but in the summertime- I’m not trying to wear hats! Let’s take a look at some great ways to accessorize your hair that are fun for summer:
Braided Headbands
Some ladies find it confusing to make a braided headband with your own hair, so why not buy one! They typically come with a hard headband or just a flexible headband. It is a cute look and you can wear your hair down or put it in a cute updo!
To achieve Raven-Symoné’s hair style:
- Start off with a rollerset
- Create a loose, low side chignon and secure with bobby pins
- Take your braided headband and find the perfect positioning for you and use a couple of bobby pins to secure so it doesn’t move around too much

Headpieces

Headpieces or headchains are so cute and work with straight or curly hair. These are definitely a conversation piece and they come in all types of metals and gems. This is perfect for the summer with your hair out and flowing.
To achieve the feature models’ look:
- As you see, this can work on all hair types- straight or relaxed hair, braids, or natural hair! You can part your hair down the middle and clip in the piece so it falls perfectly on your forehead.
Clip In Extensions
Add a pop of color to your hair! It is a cute accessory that takes no time at all to show your creative side. Most of us are scared to go purple, blue or any other non-natural hair color, so this is the safe route.
To achieve Katy Perry’s look:
- You can take any type of hair or style- straight or curly
- Purchase some colored clip ins from a beauty supply store (or make your own clip ins)
- Clip in chunks of color throughout the hair. You can use one color or multiple colors.
What is your ultimate summer hair accessory?
