Sidequel: Successful Spin-Offs Of Popular Television Shows

Spinoffs are greatly appreciated for a few reasons: they allow viewers to see lesser characters develop independently; they give viewers a different take of the characters from the previous sitcom; and, finally, spinoffs are uniquely responsible for creating that ‘neighboring effect’ on television, allowing audiences and characters, alike, feel as if they are stepping from one living room into another. This has been seen time and time again in television. Cheers begot Fraiser, Grey’s Anatomy begot Private Practice, Buffy begot Angel, and  Dr. Who begot Torchwood. Jennifer Williams Is Getting Her Own Reality Show And Guess Who’s Producing It?

Jennifer Williams hasn’t exactly disappeared since opting not to return for the fifth season of “Basketball Wives” in Miami. She’s still seen out and about at virtually ever reality TV red carpet event in NYC, but one place we haven’t been seeing her is on the television — yet.

While the ex-wife of Eric Williams attended the screening for VH1′s new series, “The Gossip Game,” Jennifer let on that she’s working on a spin-off reality show of her own and since we already know how the Viacom network gets down, you should know this project has Mona Scott-Young’s name all over it.

According to VH1′s blog:

“It came as a shock to many when word got out that Jenn wouldn’t return to the fifth season of Basketball Wives. Arguably the only “real” Basketball Wife, many revered Jenn for her class and maturity on screen. When asked about her departure she simply stated, “It wasn’t for me anymore.” But does that mean she’s over television, too? Lucky for us, Jenn revealed she’s in talks with Scott-Young to create a reality show of her own, embodying the philosophy that when one door closes, another surely opens. A glimpse into her new business ventures with Lucid Cosmetics, or her relationship with new boo Cisco Rosado (who happens to be the founder of CMG entertainment) could work, especially if we see another side of Jenn– the “real” her, and we aren’t talking about Drake songs.”

This doesn’t come as a total shock as Jenn obviously loves the spotlight, and VH1 is known for trying to milk every last ounce of juice they can out of their reality TV cohorts. What would be surprising though, and I hate to say it, would be Jenn’s ability to carry a show by herself. Among the hyper personalities of the women on BBW, her chill demeanor is a welcome presence, but on her own I can see her coming off as very…boring — unless there’s some drama to be seen between her and her man. And, personally, I wouldn’t wish that on them because too many reality relationships have gone by the wayside as a result of these types of television shows.

Despite the lack of a clear vision for the new series — or a premiere date — one thing we do know is the show will not have a storyline about Jenn reuniting with her long lost buddy Evelyn Lozada. According to VH1:

“[F]or those of you who are wondering if Jenn and her former costar, Evelyn Lozada, ever became friends again… Jenn uttered not a single word when asked about their onscreen quarrel. But there was a look! And that look read “Hell to the no.”

That’s probably a good move. What do you think about Jenn getting her own reality show. Will you watch?

‘I Won’t Address Trash’ — Except She Does: Evelyn And Shaunie Respond To Gloria’s Claim There’d Be No BBWLA Without Her

I mentioned in my roundup of knowledge shared during part one of the Basketball Wives LA reunion last night that Gloria Govan got a little full of herself and starting yapping away about how there would be no show if she and Laura didn’t come to LA and agree to be a part of the series. Knowing that Shaunie O’Neal is the, term used loosely, brains behind the entire Wives franchise, I’m sure a lot of people were looking at Gloria like, girl, stop playing yourself. And it appears two of those such people were Shanie and her sidekick Evelyn Lozada, or is the other way around?

While getting into last night’s drama, the two made sure to correct Gloria’s fallacy, with Evelyn stating:

Shaunie then jumped in with a retweet and:

We already know the Govan sisters are no friends of Evelyn and Shaunie’s so this isn’t a complete surprise, but the truth is no one is really winning taking credit for this show. If Shaunie’s the reason for the spinoff, why are you employing your man’s sidepiece (Laura)? And if Gloria is the one who should be taking credit, how is it you get the least camera time and have been reportedly fired? It just doesn’t look good either way. My main reaction to this response, though, has already been captured by one tweeter who told Evelyn:

I see @IyanlaVanzant needs to go in on @EvelynLozada again! She still hasn’t learned

Word. She might wanna mind her own Basketball Wives business.

Is Gloria talking out the side of her neck claiming to be the reason for the LA spinoff or is she kind of right?

They’re Baaaaack! Trailer For “Chrissy & Mr. Jones” Drops With Baby Drama, Tears, And Some Bridal Moments…

Last week we told you that the reality show, “Chrissy & Mr. Jones” is going to replace the now defunct “Ev & Ocho.” In the process, we also showed you a clip from the upcoming series, which will showcase the lives of Chrissy Lampkin and rapper Jim Jones outside of their “Love and Hip Hop” friends (and enemies) as they try to build said lives together. In it, we saw the couple discussing Chrissy’s hopes to put baby plans on hold, and Jim’s (and Mama Jones’) disappointment at her choice. In the longer clip that has been released, we see what a full season will be like, and it includes more baby drama, relationship drama (it looks like Chrissy moves out!), and some shots of SOMEBODY’S wedding. I won’t directly assume it’s Chrissy and Jimmy’s, but after all the fuss she made over getting engaged, it would be nice if they could knock some nuptials out quickly. Anywho, check out the full trailer from their upcoming season and let us know if you’re excited to watch their drama unfold. And yes, we know that with Chrissy there can be nothing but that. If you’re down for the clowning and the love fest, you already know where to catch the show, and it premieres on Sept. 24. at 9:30/8:30c.

17,000 Signatures And Counting: ‘Chad and Ev’ Boycott Moves On To VH1 Advertisers

May 1st, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

Source: Mrsgrapevine.com

In only a matter of a week, Alexis M.’s petition to boycott “Basketball Wives’” spinoff “Chad and Ev” has gone from 691 signatures on day 1 to 17,546 and counting, and now the creator is ready to turn up the heat.

Initially, the goal was simply to have supporters sign the petition and send e-mails to VH1′s CEO, now Alexis is attempting to not only hit Chad and Evelyn where it hurts but the entire network by going after its advertisers. She’s asking those who want to see this program off the air to send letters to companies that support the show through advertising or to stop buying these company’s products all together. Advertisers include Summer’s Eve, Garnier, Twix, Progressive Insurance, Bounty, Pepsi, Proactiv, General Motors, and Burger King, who Alexis reached out to personally. In a petition update, she wrote:

“I’m currently waiting on Burger King’s president to return my phone call. I sent him all the video footage of the ‘Basketball Wives’ violence. Burger King didn’t even know what ‘Basketball Wives’ is. The secretary was polite enough to view some of the video footage of the violence.”

There were reports that all of the organized backlash that’s come against the show since Jennifer Williams announced her lawsuit was prompting VH1 and Shed Media to file a counter suit against her for contract violations regarding bad mouthing the series and doing press without permission, but Alexis says she’s contacted VH1 and found out those rumors were false. So, without any official word from VH1 or Shed yet on these movements, it’s hard to tell what will come of the efforts but VH1 has to be just a little bit—or a whole lot—nervous about losing their “Basketball Wives” empire at this point.

Will you boycott products from these advertisers that support the show?

Non-Mother Effin’ Fans Start Petition to Boycott ‘Chad and Ev’

April 25th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

Source: Realitytea.com

Uh oh. Evelyn’s shenanigans are starting to catch up with her. Viewers of “Basketball Wives” who are tired of the table hopping and bottle throwing are attempting to get Evelyn where it would hurt the most—her wallet. Seeing that it’s unlikely VH1 would get rid of it’s lead character on BBW, these fans want viewers to boycott the reality TV star’s new spinoff show with fiancé Ochocinco, “Chad and Ev.”

Alexis M. is the creator of the Change.org petition encouraging people not to watch the upcoming show, and here’s why.

“Evelyn Lozada is a bully. The violence on ‘Basketball Wives’ is horrible and disgraceful,” Alexis wrote on the petition. “This is not a hate petition against Eveyln Lozada. We simply will not support violence. It hurts to see violence amongst women on television for entertainment purposes. It is not OK for women to hit each other on TV.”

Yesterday, Sister 2 Sister reported that 691 people had signed the petition. Since the site is down for scheduled maintenance today it’s not clear if that number has increased, but considering the amount of criticism “Basketball Wives” has garnered from the beginning and the increasingly erratic behavior Evelyn has displayed in the past few weeks, I’m sure it has. A couple of signers also left comments with their signature, calling out Evelyn and Chad for their foolishness.

”[Ocho] has young children, and this woman has thrown glasses, bottles and ran across a table like she’s a part of a wild animal park,” Carolyn pointed out. “Will she put on her fake smile and act the proper stepmom? Too late, she’s already shown her true colors and they are ugly. She deserves no show.”

“Evelyn is an embarrassment to women and she has no morals. She’s a bully and attacks people who are afraid of her. If VH1 supports her i can no longer support VH1. She is a low class, gold digging bully.”

“I find it strange Evelyn is boycotting Jennifer Williams for doing the right thing. I’m happy she’s being boycotted for doing the wrong thing.”

Beyond the petition, the creators are also asking viewers to contact VH1′s parent company Viacom to express disgust with Evelyn’s actions. Guess we’ll have to see how quickly the word spreads—and how Evelyn reacts. Considering her and Ochochinco are supposed to earn $300K a piece for this show, I can guarantee she is not happy.

Will you sign this petition to boycott “Chad and Ev?”

Will You Watch? Jim Jones and Chrissy Lampkin Snag VH1 Spinoff

April 16th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

Source: Keshaphotography.com

This news is something most of us probably thought would happen but then after the way Chrissy and Mona Scott-Young seemed to be beefing during the “Love and Hip Hop” season 2 reunion we figured it was a rap. Well, it appears both Jim and Chrissy were calling VH1′s bluff by saying they wouldn’t be exposing their lives in front of the cameras anymore because rumor has it, they are set to star in their own spinoff show on the network.

According to a source over at Mouthtoears.com, which the site says never fails them, Jim and Chrissy  got:

“Green lighted by VH1 for five to seven 30-minute episodes of straight Jones ( which they are supposed to be filming now).”

The source says Jimmy and Chrissy refused to deal with Mona in the project and requested that she not be involved. At the same time, they sort of thew Mama Jones under the bus because word is her show will be scratched and she’ll appear on Jim and Chrissy’s spinoff instead, which currently has the working title of “Jim and the Family Jones.”

With no Chrissy on “Love and Hip Hop,” the cast has been reduced to Olivia, Yandy, Kimbella, and reportedly Erica Mena. Since Emily B.’s name is missing from that list I have a feeling that one, she’s following in the footsteps of her best friend Chrissy by leaving the show, and two, she’s probably trying to get her own show starring her and Fab, which there have been rumors of.

Either way, I can admit I wouldn’t mind tuning in to a Jones lovefest once a week, and without Yandy or Somaya on the show, Chrissy really shouldn’t have any reason to fight—although I feel like she may find one anyway.

Would you watch “Jim and the Family Jones if this news is true?”

Down South Drama: ‘Love and Hip Hop’ Atlanta Confirmed

February 6th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

While viewers are getting ready for the season finale of “Love and Hip Hop,” which airs tonight on VH1, the network is ready to capitalize on the success of the franchise with an Atlanta spinoff. That’s right, side pieces, girlfriends, and baby mamas of down south rappers and music men are about to get their own show.

According to a VH1 spokeswoman, casting hasn’t been finalized yet, and it’s hard to think of a “relevant” Atlanta woman who doesn’t already have a reality show. We’ve got the “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Toni Braxton’s with “Braxton Family Values,” Tiny’s got the Family Hustle, Keyshia Cole already did her thing on BET, and Monica and Chilli have had reality TV runs as well. Plus “Preacher Wives” is about to hit the city. To say the ATL is saturated with “reality” TV would be an understatement.

In season 2 of the original series, it looked like Teairra Mari was being set up to appear on a spinoff, and in interviews she said she couldn’t talk about the possibility, so she might be cast member no. 1, but as far as who the other ladies could be, I’m at a loss.

Who do you think VH1 will scout to appear on their “Love and Hip Hop” Atlanta series?

Spinoff Disaster: Mama Jones Has Her Own Show

January 23rd, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

I think we’re all guilty of speaking this nonsense into existence. The more we saw Jim Jones’ mama, Nancy, on “Love and Hip Hop,” the more we knew it was only a matter of time before she got her own spinoff reality show. Initially, people joked that she should have a series with Keyshia Coles’ mother, Frankie, but Nancy’s got her own ish now.

According to Bossip, production for the show already began this past Friday in New York. I assume the series will air on VH1, but what it will be about we can only speculate. I’m going with tales of a psychotic b**** getting her clothing and condom line off the ground while attempting to let her son finally be a man at 35.

I know Jim is somewhere shaking his head right now.

Are you surprised Mama Jones was given her own spinoff? Will you watch her reality show?

Is Nene Threatening to Leave RHOA?

December 6th, 2011 - By Brande Victorian

Nene Leakes is coming awfully close to looking like the ego-tripping Jackie Christie of the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” crew. Rumor has it she is threatening to leave the show, saying she’s become “too big” for the series and that Bravo doesn’t pay her enough. But what has really set her off and potentially packing is finding out that Kim is getting a spinoff show.

A source told Star magazine, “She’s furious that Kim got her own show and she didn’t. Nene has told friends if she doesn’t get what she wants, she will quit! She thinks she’s Madonna.”

That attitude hasn’t gotten her Madonna-style treatment though. Supposedly Nene demanded a stretch limo, a presidential suite at her hotel, and an expensive make-up artist before her most recent appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” after Sunday night’s episode aired, and when she didn’t get what she wanted she let Andy have it.

“She acted nice to host Andy Cohen while shooting but laid into him afterward and said she wants her own show,” the source claimed.

I don’t know what magic mirror Nene’s been looking into that told her she was the hottest celebrity around, but it sounds like Bravo is keeping her nice and humbled. I wonder if they’ll eventually give in if she decides to make good on her threats, though.

Would you still watch the Real Housewives of Atlanta without Nene?
