Dwyane Wade Tackles The Hard Topics: ‘I Was Probably A Terrible Husband’
Over the years, Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade has taken a lot of hits off the court about his personal life, including his fight for custody of his children, the alleged way he treated his ex-wife and his current relationship with actress Gabrielle Union. Now, he’s finally ready to discuss it…well, a little bit.
In the June 2013 issue of Jet magazine, Dwyane Wade takes time to discuss his role as a father and in the midst of that, he reveals bits and pieces of what his relationship is like now with the boys’ – Zaire, age 11, and Zion, age 5 – mother, Siovaughn Funches:
Why he fought so hard for custody of his children:
“I didn’t set out to get full custody but I wasn’t able to see my kids the way I wanted and I’m not a parent who’s going to run away from his responsibilities. I was probably a terrible husband, but I pride myself on being a good dad.”
The state of his relationship now with Siovaughn:
“It’s been six years and hopefully one day she and I can get to the point where it’s a lot easier than it is now to co-parent.”
It should come as no surprise that they don’t get along: Funches allegedly claimed Wade gave her an STD and he’s allegedly called the police on her for not bringing their children back to him on time. The two were together for many years, since they were both teenagers, so there are likely some very hurt feelings still involved.

She’s Still Cray: Dwyane Wade’s Ex-Wife Arrested For Child Abduction
Father’s Day was a filled with quite a bit of drama around the Wade household. Miami Heat player Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife Siovaugh Funches was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted child abduction, two counts of unlawful visitation interference and one count of resisting arrest after she delayed the boys’ return to D. Wade’s custody in Miami. And now Dwyane has filed an emergency motion asking a Chicago judge to suspend his ex-wife’s visitation rights completely.
According to The Associated Press, here’s how the problem started:
According to the filing, the two boys were to be picked up by Wade’s sister around noon Saturday so they could make a 3:05 p.m. flight from Chicago to Miami so they could be in South Florida for the entirety of Father’s Day.
Wade’s sister got no response at the home, and after “several hours” the sheriff’s office was called to send someone to the scene, according to the filing. It also said Funches-Wade attempted to leave the home without the children when one of the responding deputies tried taking her into custody. The boys, at that time, were with Alarcon inside the home, according to the filing.
Wade eventually hired a private jet to bring his sons home early Sunday, and upon their arrival, his older son told him that Alarcon “smacked him on the head,” according to court records.
Alcaron is Nadgee Alarcon, a woman who is a part of the A Woman’s Worth ministry Siovaughn founded and who was also charged with one count of resisting arrest in connection with this incident. It’s hard to tell from that bit of information whether Siovaughn was really trying to pull something, which makes Dwyane’s response seem a bit dramatic, but given his ex-wife’s history it appears he didn’t want to take any chances. Plus, it was Father’s Day.
“That’s what mattered most to me, getting them here to be with me on Father’s Day,” he told AP.
In his court filing he wrote in reference to Siovaughn:
“Once again, S.L. has used our minor children as the proverbial pawns in this contentious dissolution of marriage action. This court must take action to protect our minor children from further exposure to the present environment S.L. creates while they are in her care and preventing S.L. from exercising her parenting time in a manner that is harmful to our children. The minor children have been subjected to great deal of drama/trauma as a result of S.L.’s conduct.”
Siovaughn was reportedly taken to a hospital after her arrest, telling officers she was experiencing shortness of breath and thought she was having an asthma attack. On Monday, she posted her $10,000 bond and was released from custody and is due back in court in August. She may have to seek new representation though, because according to a filing late Tuesday, the law firm of Kalcheim Haber LLC asked the court for permission to withdraw as attorney for Funches-Wade, saying it has been “unable to resolve significant issues regarding” the direction of her representation.
Meanwhile, Dwayne’s hearing regarding cutting his ex’s visitation is set for June 26, which could end up being the date of Game 7 of the NBA Finals if the Heat and Thunder extend the series to its limit. So far, the drama hasn’t affected his game at all which is good for The Heat, but hopefully his sons are holding up OK.
Do you think Siovaughn should have been arrested?
