Cool Side Hustles: Want to Make an Extra $10k a Year? Try Face Painting

Tashia Bagwell Funtastic Faces

Tashia Bagwell earns an extra $10K to $13k a year from face painting.

Every mother has done it at least once. It meaning having to improvise and get resourceful at the last minute to make one of their child’s parties go off without a hitch. In Tashia Bagwell’s case, that meant making sure there was a face painter at her then-three-year-old daughter’s birthday party. So in 2004, she went and purchased paint and supplies from a local craft store and decided to take all “cheek art” matters into her own hands.

Nine years later, Bagwell has turned her love of art and face painting into a lucrative side hustle (Funtastic Faces) where she can bring in an extra $10,000 to $13,000 per year. When she’s not at her day job or attending school part-time, Bagwell can be found painting at events in the Baltimore area for a number of organizations, the Bea Gaddy Foundation, the Williams of York Catholic School, and the Historic Charles Street Association to name a few.

I recently caught up with Bagwell to learn more about how she got started and to find out how she plans to take her face painting business to the next level in 2013.

Madame Noire: What is your day job?
Tashia Bagwell: I currently work for a nonprofit in Baltimore City that does economic development for downtown Baltimore.

MN: Did you think that it could be a lucrative side hustle right away?
TB: In the beginning, I never imagined that it would be such a successful business as it is today. I began to take it serious when I was hired to do events for [well-known] charities and organizations in the community. My work was exposed to more people and from that came more business.

It seems that just about everything JHud touches turns to gold. First, it was her Oscar-worthy role in Dreamgirls. Then it was her Grammy-award winning debut album. Now it is Weight Watchers. JHud wowed us with her phenomenal weight loss reveal last year, and now she hopes to influence people in her native Chicago to do the same. JHud became the first celebrity to have a Weight Watchers center when she opened the Jennifer Hudson Weight Watchers Center in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood last fall.

What’s next for JHud? A launch of her new clothing line, the Jennifer Hudson Collection on QVC this fall, as well as recurring role on the hit NBC show Smash, where she’ll take on the role of Broadway star Veronica Moore.

Money always seems to be a hot topic on “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” – who has a sugar daddy, whose car got repo’d, who rocks designer label bags, who is playing with whose money and who is “rich.” That’s why we’re taking a look at the always interesting business ventures of the Atlanta Housewives and what they’re up to during their off-season – from wig designs and wine endorsements, to sex toys and funeral parlors, they’re keeping the dollars coming in all year round.

Kim Zolciak: Singer/Wig Designer/Wine Endorser

Much of the first few seasons of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” focused on Kim Zolciak’s burgeoning singing career – initially in country music, and she was also getting big money from her former sugar daddy, Big Poppa. Along the way, the former LPN also picked up a wig line, which she hasn’t quite “pulled off” yet (unlike Sheree.) Zolciak has also endorsed a line of fruit flavored wines. In 2011, her net worth was $500,000.

Linnethia “NeNe” Leakes: Actress/Businesswoman

The fourth season of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” opened with NeNe Leakes screaming that she is “rich, b***h!” and bragging about her appearance on “Celebrity Apprentice” (which was later parodied on a YouTube remix.) But over the last year, Leakes has really blown up outside the reality TV show realm. She has landed a recurring role on “Glee” as well as a spot on the new sitcom, “The New Normal.” Leakes was also shown mixing business with pleasure in season four during meetings with “business partner” and pizza tycoon, John Kolaj, who showered her with lavish gifts. (“You get lunch; I’ll get the Louboutins!”) And don’t forget, Leakes is also an accomplished author. Check her book, Never Make the Same Mistake Twice: Lessons on Love and Life Learned the Hard Way. She was toting a net worth of $4.5 million in 2011.

Kandi Burruss: Singer/Songwriter/Sex Toy Designer

When Kandi Burruss joined the show in season two, she stood apart from the rest of the cast because her background was one of legit show business success. A former member of the ’90s R&B girl group, Xscape, Burruss also has a Grammy award under her belt for co-writing “No Scrubs” with TLC and has been a major songwriter and producer for years. Since becoming an Atlanta Housewife, Burruss has launched a line of adult toys called “Bedroom Kandi” that features a vibrator that moves to the beat of whatever music is playing. (This thing her mom uses is not one of them.) Aside from that, she has her own adult Ustream program called Kandi Koated Nights, and has her own competition show on Bravo called, “The Kandi Factory.” Burruss seems to be the wealthiest cast member, with a net worth of $35 million in 2011.
