Nickles Prepares to Subpoena Thomas
(Washington Post) — D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles was preparing to issue a subpoena Tuesday evening to D.C. Council member Harry Thomas Jr. for documents related to his oversight of a nonprofit organization that is not registered with the Internal Revenue Service or in good standing with city regulators. Nickles said Thomas (D-Ward 5) failed to voluntarily turn over the information. Last week, Nickles sent Thomas a letter asking for financial and other information about the donors and leaders of Team Thomas, which the council member bills as a community nonprofit.
Mayoral Challenger Gray Calls on Fenty to Fire Attorney General
(Washington Post) — D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray (D) on Thursday called on Mayor Adrian M. Fenty to fire Attorney General Peter Nickles, arguing that Nickles is serving not as the city’s top lawyer but as “the mayor’s political hatchet man.” In a new and aggressive attack on the Fenty administration’s ethics, Gray said in a statement that Nickles cannot be trusted to be impartial because he has been “protecting the mayor’s cronies” and working as an “enabler of the mayor’s cronyism.”
Nickles steps in to Keep Fenty Friend Off Banned List
(Washington Examiner) — D.C.’s attorney general interceded to keep a friend and fraternity brother of Mayor Adrian Fenty off a list of those banned from doing business with the city, the Washington Examiner has learned.
Contracting officials drafted a letter that would have barred Sinclair Skinner from city contracts, but Attorney General Peter Nickles, a longtime friend and confidant of the mayor, ordered the letter rewritten to delay the action until Skinner could respond.
