So let’s see. We’ve done Barbadian folks, Haitian folks, Jamaican folks, Trinidadian folks and more, so what’s missing? The Bahamas of course! Many of our favorite actors and performers rep the country very hard, and some even own property there or represent as ambassadors. We’ve looked up a few and thought you’d like to know which black folks are Bahamian and how they’re tied to the country. Shall we proceed?

Persia White

The child of a black Bahamian father and a white American mother, the “Breaker High” and “Girlfriends” star was born in Miami of all places, however, the actress was raised in Nassau. Coincidentally, it was her mother who moved the family to the Bahamas when she was a child, and it was for work purposes. During her time there, she even garnered a scholarship to the Nassau Civic Ballet Company when she was only three years old (uh, what was I doing at the age of three…?). Of course, since she and her family moved back to the US when she was eight, White has been back to the Bahamas on many different occasions. She even went with Caribbean Living a couple years ago and they documented her trip.

Remember when “Girlfriends” was on UPN? Man, Monday nights would never be the same. “Girfriends” was black women’s own version of “Sex and the City,” but something they could relate to just a little bit more (not everyone can splurge on Manolo Blahnik shoes like some people). These sistas were smart, funny, classy (except for Lynn at times), fashionable, and did I mention funny? Their broke, busted and disgusted relationships and somewhat all over the place lives were what kept us tuned in every Monday, and without the show, we wouldn’t have had the good years of “The Game,” (its spinoff) and positive representations of black women. Those WERE the days. Let’s see where the cast is at nowadays…

While there are many celebrities who have hooked up then hightailed it, some, like Jay-Z and Beyoncé,  are living happily ever after.

“Dysfunctional Friends” looks like it has the makings of a Tyler Perry movie, as some of er’body has been added to the cast — including “Single Ladies” veteran Stacey Dash and NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens. Art doesn’t totally imitate life, though. Owens plays a football star in the film who’s recently been traded to a team in Ontario, banking $4 million. Off-screen, he’s a player without a team, attempting to get his child support payments lowered.

The movie is a drama/comedy about college friends who reunite after someone in their group passes away. In the clip below, we see an awkward interaction between T.O.’s character Jackson, Lisa (played by Stacey Dash), and an old acquaintance. Other stars in the ensemble cast include Tatyana Ali, Jason Weaver, Wesley Jonathan, Stacy Kiebler, Hosea Chanchez, Essence Atkins, Persia white, Meagan Good, Reagan Gomez, and more.

I get the made-for-TV movie feel from this one, myself. But what do you think? Could “Dysfunctional Friends” be worth a trip to the theater? Make a decision because this black “Big Chill” is NOT going direct to DVD.
