Horizon City’s Angie Gomez, 19, was recently indicted for receiving donations of up to $17, 000 after lying to people in her community about having cancer. The young woman started her lie in January of last year, telling her high school classmates that she’d found out that she had cancer and only had six months to live. Once word spread about her “diagnosis,” the publications in the area, including the El Paso Times, reached out to interview Gomez and to get her story to the masses. According to ABC News, this is what she told the paper:
“The doctors are telling me to prepare myself and to start planning for what’s about to come. They think the worst is coming, when you start to feel sick and you can’t move. I think they’re all crazy.”
It’s understandable why Gomez was so optimistic and thought doctors were crazy. She was faking, of course! Detective Liliana Medina of the Horizon City Police told ABC News that after investigating, it became clear that Gomez hadn’t had cancer at any point. Ever. In life. Gomez and people in the community started the Achieve the Dream Foundation that was supposed to help young people with cancer. They sold T-shirts and accessories to raise money, but a lot of that money wound up in the hands of Gomez. They even threw a prom in her honor after she told people she missed her high school prom because of treatments for her cancer.
But by summer, people who were helping to raise money for Gomez started to become suspicious of her. Though her cancer was allegedly terminal, she was still up, moving and appeared in great health and spirits. These same individuals informed police, and the investigation kicked off in June of last year. If you’re wondering what role her parents played, somehow the mother of Gomez was unaware for a time that she was doing all of this, but when she found out, she allegedly pushed her daughter to tell the truth. Gomez, now 19, was arrested last week and indicted on a state felony charge of theft of property of $1,500 to $20,000. Her bail is set at $50,000.
And as you should know, Gomez is not the only person who got caught lying about having cancer to attain money and gifts. We told you the story earlier in the month of 25-year-old Jessica Vega, who lied about having leukemia so that she could get people to help her have a lavish wedding and honeymoon. The mother of two told people in her town, which is near NYC, that she just wanted to have her “dream” wedding before she passed. And she did have it–at the expense of those who opened their wallets and hearts to her. But when her new husband found out about her lies, they fell out and eventually divorced, and he told everyone involved that she was a liar. She was arrested on April 3.
Vega was just ordered to somehow pay back $13,368 to her victims, and she will have to remain in jail until May 15 to see if she will have to do any real time. She plead guilty in Orange County Court to scheming to defraud and possession of a forged instrument. The forged instrument was a fake letter by her that was supposed to be signed by a doctor to prove that she was indeed ill. Though her ex-husband is the one who told people she was lying, he plans to help her pay back the victims. Guess he doesn’t want to see the mother of his children go out like that.
It’s truly sad to see the extent people will go to get a little bit (or a lot) of money. There are individuals out here with cancer-stricken children and battling these illnesses themselves, and they could use all the help and d0nations they can get. But instead you’ve got these trifling fools tricking people. Once again, karma is one evil, well-dressed b***h, and these two better look out…

It’s always nice to read about when trifling people get in trouble for putting their foot in their mouth–especially corrupt police officers. Check out Michael Daragjati, 32, an eight-year veteran who is now facing civil rights charges for a stop-and-frisk arrest on a 31-year-old black man in Staten Island back in April. After the man complained about the stop and asked for his badge number, the officer wasn’t feeling that and decided to arrest him for resisting arrest.
Unfortunately for Officer Daragjati, he started running his mouth very fast. After having the man sit in jail for 36 hours, filling out a random report and going to court for the arrest, Officer Daragjati called up a female friend to brag about his deeds. The convo included the following ignorant mess, according to the New York Times:
“’I sat there for a couple of hours by the time I got it all done but, fried another N-Word,’ the officer says on a transcript provided by prosecutors. ‘What?’ The woman asks. Officer Daragjati uses the same phrase and then adds, ‘no big deal.’ The woman laughs.”
This phone call set Officer Daragjati up (not literally) to get charged with a misdemeanor civil rights violation that can get him a year in prison, or even a fine of up to $100,000. It has also come to light that Officer Daragjati lured an individual he thought to have stolen one of his snowplows (from a separate business he runs) to an open parking lot in Staten Island, where a group of men jumped the guy and threatened him with a gun. Officer Daragjati was later found showing off photos of the man’s injuries. AND homeboy also got caught and charged with insurance fraud for trying to get money to damage one of his own vehicles. So on top of civil rights charges, Officer Daragjati is looking at both extortion and insurance fraud, the latter two having more consequences than the first (up to 20 years in prison). And let’s be honest, we know this crooked cop isn’t going to receive any time for the false arrest, especially since this mess happens on the regular.
Have you ever been falsely arrested or stopped because of your skin color?

If What’s Love Got to Do With It? taught us anything, it’s that a woman can take so much foolery before she snaps back–and in a big way. Such is also true for the stepdaughter of former New York governor David Paterson. Ashley Dennis, 23, was arrested this weekend for clocking her boyfriend, Brian McGuinness, 30, over the head with a bottle. According to reports, when a heated argument turned physical in McGuinness’ West Village apartment around 4:45 a.m. on Saturday morning, the 30-year-old man (who should know better), tried to choke out Dennis. She allegedly picked up a nearby bottle and proceeded to break it over his head. Afterwards, she took her anger to the next level and repeatedly slammed his leg in a door until he passed out. A witness to the bloody aftermath had this to say to the New York Daily News:
“I heard a guy saying, ‘Help me, help me’. “Then he started saying, ‘Fire, fire,’ to get someone’s attention. I knew it was serious. He wasn’t moving. He had two shoes on top of him like she kicked him out of the apartment and threw the shoes.”
The landlord of the apartment, Pearl DiGeronimo, added her two cents:
“There was blood on the floor, on the door handle, all over the hallway. I thought it was a murder. Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn. The man must have done something to provoke that reaction.”
Reports say that the twosome didn’t seem to be under the influence of anything. Dennis was arrested and charged with felony assault, while her boyfriend was given stitches for his injuries and was later charged with criminal obstruction of breathing–a misdemeanor. So…someone tries to choke you, you defend yourself, and you get into more trouble than them? Crazy! Can’t say that I advocate violence of this proportion (not a fan of violence at all), but you just can’t choke all your problems away all willy-nilly and think someone won’t lay their hands on you too…

(New York Times) — In yeshivas, they are sometimes taunted as “monkeys” or with the Yiddish epithet for blacks. At synagogues and kosher restaurants, they engender blank stares. And dating can be awkward: their numbers are so small, friends will often share at least some romantic history with the same man or woman, and matchmakers always pair them with people with whom they have little in common beyond skin color.
