Ladies, make sure you are marching to your own beat—at least when it comes to motherhood. This is the advice that fashion designer, author, and TV personality Nicole Richie wants mothers to know. In a recent exclusive article with People.com she opened up about her parenting style and some advice for moms to be.
The former “Simple Life” star said, ‘Don’t let anyone touch your stomach…‘Don’t let everyone think they have the right to just touch you,’ and added “Who wants that? Nobody.”
Richie, 34 is married to Good Charlotte musician Joel Madden and they have two children, a son Sparrow, 7 and a daughter Harlow, 8.
Nicole is one busy mommy. The entrepreneur who has an accessories line called House of Harlow 1960 and a reality show called “Candidly Nicole” said, “There’s not one way to raise children…there’s not one way to be a mother. It really depends on your house and your lifestyle.”
And while motherhood has it’s serious moments Nicole says it’s nice to be able to laugh. “Oh my God, they make me laugh every day…they make me laugh all the time. I’m always finding [funny] pictures on my phone of them that they take, and videos that they take.”
In an episode of the OWN Network’s “Where Are They Now,” Nicole talked about the importance of staying honest and how she views herself as a mother.
“I have to always come from a place of love and compassion with them. My kids operate best when I let them have a voice…and I really explain things to them, because really, kids want to be told the truth. They just do. They just want you to be truthful.”
And when it comes to making mommy improvements she said “I do know I do the best that I can…I’m probably constantly—every day—talking to other moms figuring out the best way to have a strong relationship with our kids.”
In addition to raising their little ones Richie and Madden are passionate about giving back to other children. They founded “The Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation” in 2010 where they provide grants to non-profit organization’s in the areas of human rights, education and health care.
Her husband spoke about why they started it and said, “It was then obvious. We would start a family foundation and learn as we go. Our purpose? We wanted to better the lives of children. With our daughter, Harlow, on the way, it seemed like a great start to building our family around positivity and consciousness. I was raised in a family that was centered on faith. I want to instill that same faith in my children and—no pun intended— this is the foundation for that. I believe a life that is not lived in the service of God and others is not worth living. I want to teach my children that.”
Fashion always looks better on the street for some reason. A dope outfit with natural lighting and nature as the backdrop just adds an unexplainable element to it. Nicole Richie has been a trendsetter for years. The mother of two (Harlow and Sparrow) is married to musician Joel Madden since 2010. One thing we love about Nicole Richie is she barely wears makeup. She explained why in The New York Times:
I don’t wear a lot of makeup. I try, over all, to keep my skin hydrated and to let it breathe. I’ll use Clé de Peau concealer to cover up my under-eye situation and Cover Girl mascara. Those are my go-tos. And I’ll use a Shu Uemura eyelash curler to make my eyes more alive. I don’t do a blush or a lip. I do use Lucas’ Papaw ointment on my lips. I’ll also stick it up my nose with a Q-tip when I fly, so I don’t get sick. It works.
When I have an event, I work with a makeup artist. It’s not something that I get to do in my everyday life, but it’s fun to get dressed from head-to-toe. For me it’s not just about the clothes, it’s also about hair and beauty. What is the overall look? How are you going to make a piece look different? I like to experiment. I think of it as a form of self-expression. I’m someone that is constantly testing herself and pushing her own boundaries. I could say I never wear blue eye shadow, but then I’ve found myself in situations where that would work.

Street Style: 13 Dope Nicole Richie Fashion Moments
Some women can’t afford to stay at home after becoming a mother while others are career-orientated and look forward to returning to work. However, these celebrity moms decided to take some time off and raise a family.
Christina Milian teamed up with producer/songwriter The Dream to work on some music together but things turned into something more in no time. Soon after rumors began to make their way around that the two were dating, the couple eloped and then announced they were expecting a baby. Milian gave birth to little Violet in early 2010 but by that time, she and The-Dream had split up. Taking some time off from her career to become a first-time mother, the “Dip It Low” singer was hired as the social media correspondent for the reality singing competition show “The Voice” in 2012. Marking her return to music, she also signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label.
For many Mexican Americans living here in the U.S., Cinco de Mayo is a day to commemorate their Mexican pride and heritage. While many of us who aren’t Mexican join in on the celebration, here’s a list of celebs that you may not have known that are actually Mexican, either by ethnicity or nationality.
Taboo from Black Eyed Peas
As one fourth of the super group Black Eyed Peas, rapper Taboo has become an international superstar. Born to a Mexican American father and a Native American mother in Los Angeles, Taboo, real name Jaime Gomez, joined the group to replace one of its members. Black Eyed Peas went through a couple name changes and singer Fergie was brought in as the fourth member in time for their third album. Taboo began working on a solo album in 2008 but has said it will take some time to get his solo career off of the ground.
With the advent of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, it’s easier and easier for celebrities to stay connected with their fans 24/7. But while some celebrities are naturally more entertaining than others, the rest of the bunch can just be downright hard to follow either because of their bad grammar, boring content, or ignorant commentary.
Florida rapper Plies dropped out of high school to follow his dreams. He founded his own independent label with his stepbrother but Plies was hesitant to become a rapper and preferred to stay behind the scenes. Releasing several mixtapes and albums on his own Plies may be best known for his guest feature on Ludacris’ “Nasty Girl.” He may also be best known for getting nasty on twitter. Not only are his tweets raunchy, they’re grossly misspelled. His most recent PG-rated tweets include: I Gotta Stop Getting Drunk And Callin A Bihh Late Nite… I Be Out Dere 2 Bad” and “Chase Tha Money An Not Da Hoes…”
If it wasn’t for reality television, we would probably never have known them (or at least as not as well as we do now) but these reality stars decided to turn up their noses on the very thing that made them famous or resurrected their careers.
Tia and Tamera Mowry
Identical twins Tia and Tamera Mowry first gained fame as twin teens separated at birth on the sitcom “Sister, Sister.” The twins took a break from Hollywood to attend college before resurrecting their acting careers again. For six seasons, Tia played Melanie Barnett Davis on the hit show “The Game” but the sisters would work together again with their reality show “Tia & Tamera” on the Style Network. The show premiered to record numbers on the network but as each season passed so did its popularity and it was canned at the end of 2013, although according to them it was time to them to get back to living their lives off camera.
Being a famous celebrity isn’t always about popularity and fortune. Sometimes, it entails battles with the law over money, criminal allegations and scandal. Bouncing back from these legal issues, these celebrities have made a significant career strides after problems that could’ve shelved their careers for good.
When she’s not having fans at the edge of their seat on Scandal (we can’t wait until October 3!), these days, Kerry Washington is out on these red carpets being a sartorial slayer; rocking colors and fabrics that others are too scared to, wearing unique fabrics and patterns, and taking her spot at the front of the Hollywood A-list. And while we’ve noticed her fabulous fashions for a while now, People magazine has also taken notice, and decided to name her the “World’s Best Dressed Woman.” As my co-worker would say, the love for Kerry is real.
When asked by the magazine the key to her style, Washington says, “I like to find balance in an outfit where it doesn’t feel too much of any one thing. It’s not dressing like a nun and it’s also not dressing like I’m in a swimsuit competition. It’s finding the middle ground.”
Runners up behind Washington include Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Richie, Zoe Saldana, Emma Stone, Kate Bosworth, Jessica Chastain, Solange, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, and Lily Collins. You can check out the full list over at People.
Washington is definitely one of our favorites and her style is truly impeccable. Check out just a few of our most loved looks from her below and let us know if you agree with the “fixer” winning the title of the “World’s Best Dressed Woman.”
We’re all going to need some energizing music for New York Fashion Week and what better than to listen to the stylistic verses of Nikki Rich aka Nicole Richie. Her new “Candidly Nicole” stunt takes her to the recording studio where she enlists the help of her brother-in-law, Benji Madden and Rapper, Ebone Hoodrich to learn what it takes to become a rap star.
The recording session was originally sparked by her tweet, “Any chance Drake will rap about Plantar Fasciitis soon? I need a summer jam I can relate to.” Thus leading to her sitting in a studio writing versus about making gluten-free pasta and getting highlights to her bob. Corny as it may sound, it actually doesn’t sound half bad. Check out the hilarious video!

If there’s anyone in the world who’s going to seek help from a pro-NBA player and remain chic, it’s Nicole Richie. In her new “Candidly Nicole” episode, the fashionista gets the help of Minnesota Timberwolves’ Lazar Hayward to teach her how to play basketball. Nicole sports a KR3W jersey, shorts, Nike sneakers and heart-shaped sunglasses for the training day. And she takes the sport very seriously (note: the crouch grab).
Having a husband, son and dog.. who are fans of the sport, was the motivating factor behind the random lesson. To our utter surprise, she actually does pretty well on the court, making dunks and learning cool footwork. There’s even a special “Dirty Dancing” play, for those of you who typically tap out sometime between the first quarter and half-time.
