It’s a huge number, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone: Instagram has officially reached 100 million monthly users. The photo sharing company has been around for 2 1/2 years, and was purchased by Facebook last year for — take a breath — $1 billion.
In this post from the company’s co-founder Kevin Systrom, he talks up the different uses of Instagram — from the many everyday photos of people’s meals to the important photos that UN worker Kathryn Mahoney takes from her post in the Sudan. (An example above.)
“Images have the ability to connect people from all backgrounds, languages and cultures. They connect us to aid workers halfway across the world in Sudan, to entrepreneurs in San Francisco and even to events in our own backyards. Instagram, as a tool to inspire and connect, is only as powerful as the community it is made of. For this reason, we feel extremely lucky to have the chance to build this with all of you,” he writes.
CNN points out that Systrom did leave out the part about about when, a couple of months ago, everyone got really mad about their changes to the terms of service and said they were going to flee. Kim Kardashian threatened to shut down her account! That was a crazy time.
But all of that is the past, and everyone is Instagramming for their lives. Below, a funny parody video to commemorate the day.
