In the wake of the unfortunate news that a mother of two was shot and killed by a Walmart security guard because he suspected she was shoplifting, it’s good to know that all Walmart security guards aren’t trigger-happy, power-tripping off-duty cops that don’t value the lives of other people. Some are actually around to help, and thankfully Kansas City police Officer Matt Phelps, who was working the security job while off duty, was around when 20-year-old Marsheanna Clark went into full blown labor as she was leaving a Kansas City Walmart around 7:00 pm on Saturday.
KCTV is reporting that Clark was aware that her water had broken while she was waiting in line, but thought she had more time to make it to the hospital; however was surprised when she learned that her baby girl wasn’t trying to wait.
“When it wants to come, it’s just going to come,” Clark said. “You can’t do nothing, but go with the flow. I just had to push.
“I’m still in shock like, ‘no, I did not have my baby like that,'” Clark said.
Ironically, the new mom shared that she didn’t experience contractions or any form of pain that day. She was 39 weeks and scheduled to deliver her baby the following Thursday.
Officer Phelps wasted no time springing into action once he realized that Marsheanna was going into labor, applying all that he had learned from witnessing the delivery of his four children.
“I’ve seen what doctors and nurses have done in that regard,” Officer Matt Phelps said.”I worked on instinct and the limited first aid training I’ve had,” he said.
Having limited resources, Phelps is said to have pulled up a bench and coached Marsheanna through the delivery of her daughter, Marshayla, who came within five minutes of Marsheanna meeting Officer Phelps and is reported to have weighed 6 lbs, 7 oz.
The ambulance arrived minutes after Marshayla’s birth and both mom and baby are reported to be doing fine.
We’re glad to know that the mom and baby are healthy despite the unusual circumstances.
