Remember at the end of last week when we told you that the State Objection’s Board in Kansas was hearing arguments that President Obama’s name should be removed from November’s ballot because some residents don’t think he was born in Hawaii? Well, after reviewing documents from Hawaii, sleeping on it, and folks receiving a few threatening calls, it was decided that President Obama’s name would remain on the state’s ballot. Though all three members of the State Objection’s Board happen to be Republican, it was a unanimous decision that the President’s citizenship would be accepted, and folks would move on. Though people had tried to have the President’s name removed from the ballot earlier in the year to no avail (folks had to wait until after the Democratic National Convention), Kansas State University employee, Joseph Montgomery, decided to file an objection stating that the President wasn’t a citizen because US citizenship comes primarily from the father (ironically, the President’s mother and grandparents were from Kansas), and of course, the President’s father was from Kenya. The objection was heard and taken seriously, as there was a hearing on the matter last week. However, President Obama’s campaign attorney sent a letter to speak against the objection, and according to The Huffington Post, after receiving a slew of threatening phone calls, Mongtomery decided himself to withdraw his objection.
Things didn’t go off without a hitch in the ruling though. Members of the State Objection’s Board had beef with the fact that no one from the President’s camp came in person to refute claims that he wasn’t a citizen (probably because they’re as tired of talking about that ish as we are of hearing about it), and a woman name Orly Taiz, who has spoken out against the President’s citizenship for some time now, took to the floor to say that Montgomery shouldn’t have his objection withdrawn since it was being done because of duress. But when it all came down to it, the Board decided that Romney will indeed have competition on the ballot in Kansas on November 6.
It’s nice to see that this matter has been squashed, but I doubt it will be the last time someone tries to do this crap before November. Voter suppression is happening all over the country right now, even if people want to pretend they’re actually “looking out” for voters. Therefore, just be ready and willing to fight to get your vote on, folks. November 6 is coming faster than we think!
