Reality TV Trailer Sneak Peak: ‘Hollywood Exes’
There’s a whole new set of wives coming to VH1—ex-wives to be exact. We’ve told you a few details about the new series “Hollywood Exes” which will follow the former spouses of some big name Hollywood entertainers and now we’ve got a first look at some of the issues the women will be dealing with when the show debuts later this month.
The series stars Nicole Murphy (Eddie Murphy), Jessica Canseco (Jose Canseco), Sheree Fletcher (Will Smith), Mayte Garcia (Prince), and Andrea Kelly (R. Kelly), and the good thing is that the women are friends in real life. The best thing is that there wasn’t even a hint of a fight in the series promo which means the reality show already has a leg-up on the other productions on the network.
VH1 may finally be trying to balance out some of the craziness by showing women who are mature in age and behavior getting along and bonding over failed marriages to top men in the entertainment biz. It definitely looks like something that could be worth a watch if you’re not opposed to being all up in other people’s business.
The series premieres June 27 at 9pm. Check out the promo trailer and tell us what you think. Will you watch?

Reality “Wives” – Exploitive Love or Master Networking?

The latest concoction to satisfy America’s craving for drama-filled reality entertainment comes from one of the top purveyors of the reality show medium: VH1. Continuing the trend of forcing the next best thing to a celebrity (the person they are sleeping with) into the limelight, the network is set to launch a series starring the significant others of famous Black actors and comedians.
Nicole Murphy, Jessica Canseco, Sheree Fletcher, Mayte Garcia, and Andrea Kelly will star in the series set to launch this summer. Don’t know them? How about Eddie Murphy, Jose Canseco, Will Smith, Prince, and R. Kelly? The stars of the show shared a marriage bed with these gentlemen, respectively, thus the show’s title, “Hollywood Exes.” Cameras have documented the “wives” of mobsters, athletes, and upper-class men in random cities across the country. It was only a matter of time before Black Hollywood had its turn.
How dare they!?!
According to the network, these women have been friends for years and are using the show to share their relatable experiences with America. TV guide summary aside, these women are using the success of their lovers to further their own careers. If this weren’t the entertainment industry, it would sound worse than it already does.
For example, if Bill Gates’ wife started a small tech company just because she’s Bill Gates wife, the entire tech industry would badmouth her, some even in public. She’s riding his coattails, they would say. She’s using her connections to cheat people who have real talent out of an opportunity. If these sentiments sound vaguely familiar, it’s because this scenario of using relationships and position to get ahead in business is not far-fetched in any industry.

I know, another reality show, but this one actually sounds a little promising. A couple of months ago, we told you that Will Smith and Eddie Murphy’s exes were going to star in a new VH1 reality series, and now we’ve got the names of the rest of the cast members.
Staring alongside Sheree Fletcher and Nicole Murphy in “Hollywood Exes” will be R. Kelly’s ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, and Mayte Garcia, the ex-wife of Prince. Rounding out the cast will be Jose Canseco’s ex-wife, Jessica. When we first broke word about this show, some of you felt like these women’s only claim to fame was being the past lover of a famous man, but according to VH1 the purpose of the show is to prove that’s not the case.
“These five women, who have all been friends for years and in some cases for as long as 20 years, want to show the world they are more than just a trophy wife with a pretty face,” according to a VH1 press release. “They want to establish themselves as independent, successful women and bring relevance and honor to themselves separate from their very famous exes…even if there is a little drama along the way.”
I was with them up until the drama part, but you have to admit the fact that this women are friends in real life is a positive sign and sets them apart from most of the other reality stars—Evelyn and Jen excluded. Plus, the drama may not necessarily be between the ladies. We all know Nicole was recently swindled out of half of her divorce settlement and it can’t be easy walking down the street as the woman who was married to R. Kelly for 12 years amongst those child pornography charges.
Truthfully, all of these women have been divorced from their husbands for long enough that the pieces ought to have been pretty much picked up by now, but I guess that’s what they plan to prove.
So what do you think about this show now that you know the whole cast, yay or nay?
