Celebrity hair trends come and go. Sometimes styles that seemed like a good idea in the moment quickly become a cringe-worthy reminder of a very particular time and place. But other times, celebrities who take a hair plunge emerge as newly-minted style icons. And the latest track to beauty icon status? The pixie cut. It definitely takes quite a pair of cojones to chop off long, luscious locks, but these celebrities were certainly rewarded with quite a pay off for their risk. Here are our favorite pixie-haired celebs.
When a Hollywood couple makes the hard choice to split up, most of the times it’s the wife who walks away practically set for life. However, these 15 famous women were forced to cough up the alimony when the marriage was over.
Britney Spears shocked the world by marrying her childhood friend during a night of partying in Las Vegas. That union was quickly annulled and Spears found herself walking down the aisle months later, this time to her backup dancer, Kevin Federline. Her second marriage lasted a bit longer — three years — and for his time as Mr. Britney Spears, Federline received $40,000 a month in alimony. Federline is reportedly content to remain a single man in order to continue cashing in his monthly checks. Federline was originally awarded custody of their two boys but after Spears took some time off to work on personal issues, they now share joint custody.

Going under the knife in Hollywood has never been anything new. While some are open and honest with the work they’ve had done, other celebrities try to deny it ’til their death. Despite evidence showing otherwise, these celebrities have denied having plastic surgery.
Viewers instantly fell in love with NeNe Leakes and her bold personality when Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta” reality show premiered in 2008. The sudden rise in popularity also caused a rise in her bank account and soon NeNe was debuting a brand new look. After first copping to getting some pearly white veneers, the “Glee” co-star revealed all of the work she had done, including a nose job, liposuction, breast reduction and breast lifting. So when she appeared on Bethenny Frankel’s show last month, NeNe had viewers scratching their heads by denying she had any plastic surgery. Frankel herself had to get up and perform her own inspection to see if NeNe was telling the truth or not.
Janet Jackson is going to be a mama! Well, maybe. According to US Weekly, the singer and her new husband, Wissam Al Mana, are reportedly ready to start a family and they’re thinking about adopting to do it.
A source told the tabloid that Janet, who is now 47, is “quietly” looking into the process of adopting a child from a third-world country, saying:
“She now pretty much knows pregnancy is not in the cards, so she’s been looking into adopting. She’s been very moved by the events in Jordan and Syria now that she’s been living overseas. Not sure how soon it will happen, but there’s been movement on this.”
Page Six has a bit of a different take on the rumor, reporting that a family member told them “it’s going to happen and real soon,” with an additional source weighing in with:
“Janet has always been concerned about the welfare of the world’s children and it’s important to her that she affords a baby the opportunities that have been afforded her.”
Their sources also say the pop star, who has remained in remarkable shape over the years, hasn’t totally ruled out pregnancy just yet, which isn’t totally surprising considering her Hollywood cohorts are popping out babies at around the same age. Still, it’s worth questioning the legitimacy of these reports, as there isn’t exactly a strong track record of accuracy when it comes to reporting on Janet and Wissam. Remember all the hoopla earlier this year about the couple planning an extravagant wedding, only to find out they had secretly wed last year? Janet’s own family didn’t even know about the wedding so it would be surprising for news as big as this to fall through the cracks. But, if the Al Manas are indeed thinking about adopting, good luck to them on starting a family!

Whether they’re rapping too fast or singing too low, we can never understand what these entertainers are saying once they get behind the mic. We still love them, of course, but we’d just like to know what exactly they’re saying on a track every once in a while .
I’m Talking Poetic Justice: John Singleton Reflects Back On The Film As It Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary!
It’s hard to believe 20 years have passed since Janet Jackson starred as a lovelorn poetess sporting her now iconic braids and reciting Maya Angelou poetry to Tupac Shakur in John Singleton’s in Poetic Justice.
At a time when Black cinema was replete with male narratives (Boyz N the Hood, New Jack City), Singleton unapologetically gave a voice to young African-American women. As the film celebrates its 20th anniversary, Essence spoke with Singleton on having Jackson as a muse, filming during the L.A. riots and who he would cast if there were a sequel.
Whose idea was it for Janet to have the now signature braids?
That was a collaboration between myself, Janet, [dance choreographer] Fatima Robinson and a dancer named Josie Harris. Josie had the braids in Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time” video, which I directed. I brought her and Fatima and a couple of other dancers over to hang out with Janet and they all became friends. I said, “Why don’t we try and do Janet’s hair like Josie’s hair?” We got the hairstyle from Harlem and just put it in a West Coast movie.
Was the script written for Janet despite others coming to audition?
Everybody just showed up at the office. It was a movie with a Black female lead, which is rare. But I wrote it for Janet. When I first met her I told her I wanted to do my next movie with her. Critics and frustrated sisters hated on her but I understood it; not that many movies came out with Black female leads.
Who would be the modern day Lucky and Justice?
I don’t know, maybe Tyrese and Rihanna. I really want to do something with her. I talked to her before and I think she’d be very interesting. She’s young and beautiful and accessible and women like her.
You can read the rest over on Essence.com. John Singleton has some really cool stories and memories of the times they were filming.
Who would your pick be for a modern day Lucky and Justice?
Every time I hear “Irreplaceable” I’m thoroughly impressed. Not because Beyoncé sang the song oh so well or because it’s an anthem of some sorts for me. Rather, I have to give props to the track because of the fact that a man wrote it. Ne-Yo. He wrote a woman’s feelings damn near better than most women actually could share them, and even though he didn’t sing on the track, it has been one of the biggest hits of Ne-Yo’s career. But it’s actually one of many. Using his government name of Shaffer Chimere Smith on many credits, Ne-Yo has written many tracks we have had on repeat. Here are nine that just so happened to stand out the most.
With all the fuss of yesterday’s awards, we totally forgot that Ciara was debuting her new video for the Nicki-Minaj assisted single “I’m Out” during last night’s pre-show. The video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis and showcases not only Nicki busting out her usual flawless dance moves, but also Nicki Minaj trying to get in on the fun as they do some choreographed booty popping together. Aside from that, Ciara and her dancers bust a move in different settings, she shows off some chic designer fashions, and by the end, she has her usual “I’m soaking wet in a video” moment. This clip is very reminiscent of Michael and Janet Jackson trying to show off their dancing skills together wearing all black and silver in “Scream,” and it’s clear that it’s inspired by that video. There are a few moments that look like they didn’t fit, but all in all, Ciara is doing the damn thing these days, and we’re not mad at her. Especially since she left Future out of the picture this time around…
Check out the video and let us know what you think. If you’re really loving it, you should go pick up her new album, Ciara, which comes out on July 9. With the success of “Body Party” and all the love “I’m Out” is getting so far from people, Ciara is finally back on track.
