This morning fans awoke to the news that one of their faves, a living legend in her own right, Janet Jackson had an announcement, in the form of a video.
A message from Janet…https://t.co/KrzYZ4eyvD
— Janet Jackson (@JanetJackson) April 6, 2016
For those who can’t watch right now, in a 1 minute and 46 second video, she said:
On August 31, as you probably know, I launched The Unbreakable World Tour. First I just want to thank all the fans for coming out and seeing the show. Thank you so much you guys made it so enjoyable for me, each and every night. We’re in the second leg of the tour and there actually has been a sudden change. I thought it was important that you be the first to know. My husband and I are planning our family. So, I’m going to have to delay the tour.
Please, if you can try and understand that it’s important that I do this now. I have to rest up, doctor’s orders. But I have not forgotten about you. I will continue the tour as soon as I possibly can. I want to thank the dancers, the band, my entire crew. You guys were so professional, so incredibly talented, so supportive and loving, each and every night. Thank you so much and I can’t wait for us to get started again…
On her Instagram page, fans are generally supportive, sending congratulatory messages. One fan said that this video was the sweetest song Janet ever sang because she has wanted this for her, for so long. (Y’all know some of these stans do the most.) I believe there were some people who interpreted this video to mean that Jackson is already pregnant. But she was very clear that she was “planning her family.” I took that to mean that she’s not pregnant yet but is in the process of getting there.
There were also those who were perplexed by the news. You see, Janet is 49-years-old. She’ll be 50 next month. Jackson wouldn’t be the first woman to get pregnant in her forties, see Kim Fields, at 44 and Halle Berry, at 46. Still, I think we can all agree that 49 is pushing it. The average American woman begins menopause at 51, with hormone shifts beginning as early as 35. But Janet Jackson is not the average American woman and there are all types of possibilities when you have the type of money she does.
Lastly, there was the crowd that took the news, hard. You have to remember that at the announcement of this tour, folks were geeked. And considering the fact that this is not the first postponement, (She’s already canceled more than 20 shows.) fans are not only asking for their money back, there’s a bit of resentment at the timing of all of this. Some are suggesting that 50-city tours and the decision to bring a life into the world aren’t made over night. They suggested that if Janet were even thinking about both of them simultaneously, she should have never announced a tour. Others attributed the announcement to poor ticket sales. All in all, the comments, on Baller Alert’s Instagram specifically, gave me the laugh I needed for this morning.
It’s comical because while strangers really have no right to speak over a woman’s womb and what she decides to do with her body, they do raise some valid points. While we could argue back and forth about what Janet “owes” her fans, particularly the ones who had purchased tickets, there’s also the question of those dancers, band and crew members she mentioned. These people were planning to have a consistent check for almost a full calendar year, August 31, 2015 to August 28 of this year. And with the European leg canceled, I’m sure some of these musicians are left in a bit of a lurch. Janet can do whatever she wants, whenever she wants but I think we can acknowledge that this type of seemingly spontaneous planning, despite the innumerable rewards for Janet and her husband, inconveniences a whole lot of people, people who were anticipating seeing her, who had spent money to do so as well as people who were counting on a consistent form of income.
So, that brings me to the question, is it ever a bad time to announce something as wonderful and miraculous as a life coming into the world? Does it make a difference whether that life has actually been conceived or is just a potential plan?
Last night, Twitter put me on to some new information…or some old information that was new to me. This account, Throwback hits/facts (@goldenerahits) informed me that Bobby Brown and Janet Jackson were an item in the mid eighties.
It all happened with Bobby declaring his love…or infatuation for Janet on BET’s “Video Soul.”
When host Donnie Simpspon asked Bobby about his love life, he said, “I’m in love with Janet Jackson.”
And shortly after, he got a call. From there, their relationship took off.
“I really fell for Ms. Jackson. I never usually fall for women that fast, but she was an exception. Maybe it had something to do with my childhood crush; or maybe it was because she was one of the finest and most sought after women in the world at the time. I don’t know what it was, but she had me ‘open!'”
But it didn’t last too long. He told her that he loved her and wanted her to leave the man she was with but according to Bobby, she broke up with him because her parents didn’t want her with a Black man.
My first reaction was to chuckle. That’s pretty ridiculous, considering Janet and her family members are Black.
But considering the Jackson family and their dating history, I really shouldn’t be surprised.
Anyway, aside from the fact that they dated, which is interesting in and of itself, Bobby’s reaction to the whole thing is quite revealing as well.
In his 2008 biography, Bobby Brown: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But, Derrick Handspike, the author, writes about Bobby’s drug use over the years.
“Bobby has sold drugs before, so he always knew the effect they could have on you. Looking back, there were always certain incidents in his life that propelled his drug use. He reflects, ‘Watching my sister’s fiancé get killed definitely caused my drug use to escalate. I can recall that I started drinking heavily when Janet Jackson and I broke up. Before I met Janet, I would never drink hard liquor, I only drank beer. But after our break up, I started drinking hard liquor excessively. I took the way our relationship ended very hard. Not to say we were head-over-heels in love, but she was someone I had a lot of feelings for.”
He also talked about never using cocaine until he met Whitney.
All of Bobby’s reference points for escalating drug use are tied to women in his life. He might have been close to his sister’s fiancé but I’m sure it was seeing her deal with that loss and empathizing with her pain that drove him to substances. Janet broke his heart and crushed his ego so he started drinking. And Whitney, with all of her beauty, talent, influence and popularity at the time convinced him to start using cocaine.
I’m not going to deny the ability to recognize and identify triggers. It’s important. But I’m willing to bet that there’s another, deeper level to Bobby’s propensity toward addictive behaviors and addiction itself. And it likely goes deeper than the women he dated/married.
If it weren’t so, he would have managed to kick the drinking and drug use habits when the relationships ended. I don’t know much about Bobby’s cocaine use but the heavy drinking certainly didn’t stop.
Still, I get it. Bobby is used to being the blame guy. The one who catches all the hell when things go left with America’s starlets. So I understand his desire to clear his name and paint a different, more realistic picture. And that’s cool too. There’s nothing wrong with the truth. I haven’t read the whole book but I would hope that the truth about the real origins of his addictions are addressed in there too.
Janet Jackson was ready for world domination when she announced her Unbreakable World Tour. However, she had to back pedal for a moment and take a quick hiatus due to vocal surgery — not throat cancer.
Now, Janet Jackson has returned and rescheduled a slew of shows that were postponed in October. “Hey you guys, I’m happy to let you know all the shows have been rescheduled. I can’t wait to see you! Xoxo,” she tweeted.
Unfortunately, the rescheduled fates won’t actually take place until summer 2016, starting on July 1 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Col., and concluding on Aug. 28 in Cleveland.
Jackson also announced that the European leg of the tour will still begin on March 30 in Birmingham, England, and she’s added a few more U.S. tour dates in May, in addition to the already rescheduled dates.

“I Do Not Have Cancer”: Janet Jackson Slams Rumors That She Postponed Tour Dates Due To Throat Cancer
The most interesting rumors can come from the most random of places. But there are some rumors that are just plain ol’ sick and ill-bred.
Like the one about Janet Jackson postponing dates for her “Unbreakable” concert tour because of a possibly cancerous tumor on her lungs.
It all started about a week ago when Jackson told her fans that she would have to have surgery, for what, she wouldn’t expound upon. But she did say that she was going to have to reschedule a string of tour dates:
Hey you guys… Happy Holidays to each and every one of you. I need you to know, I learned today, from my doctors that I must have surgery soon. It breaks my heart to tell you that I am forced to postpone the Unbreakable Tour until the spring. Every date will be rescheduled. Please hold on to your tickets. They will be honored in a special way when the new schedule is announced. Please pray for me, my family and our entire company during this difficult time. There will be no further comment. I love you all so much and am ever grateful for your understanding and your love. Gon' b alright.
Out of nowhere, a story came about (via RadarOnline) claiming that Jackson’s doctors had found a “growth on Janet’s vocal cords that could be serious,” according to a source that was supposedly close to the singer. “It’s a medical condition that has to be taken care of immediately.”
And just like that, the rumor spread like wildfire, with people believing that stories of throat cancer were true because Jackson also postponed dates for her tour in October for vocal rest.
And while Jackson initially said, “there will be no further comment,” she decided to speak up, after all, to shut down the very ugly reports.
Jackson even went as far as to share a song called “The Great Forever” from her recent album, Unbreakable, which included her comments on those rumors. The lyrics definitely fit the situation:
“Not too pleased with what you’re diggin’
I’m just busy livin’ my life
Sources say but where ya gettin’ it
Don’t create the truth ya like”

So despite all the rumors, Jackson is okay, and she’s even been given the green light to get back on stage in March.
“I’m recovering. My doctors have approved my concerts as scheduled in Europe, and as I promised, the postponed shows will be rescheduled. Thank you for your prayers and love.”
So, again, until you hear it from Ms. Jackson, don’t believe it.
Jermaine Dupri is such an interesting character with a host interesting life and career experiences. So it would only make sense that he sit down with Wendy Williams. During their recent interview, Dupri talked about everything from tax problems, how Iggy Azalea curved him and his relationships with Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.
I mean, when you’re Black, you’re first generation. I’m first generation money in my family. You don’t have anybody to teach you anything you just have to learn. So for these kids and any kid that I’ve mentored, at least they have me to basically show them and see things that they can stay away from.
I just have a heart that doesn’t really care about a lot of things. So, a lot of times people hear stuff about me in the media, it’s stuff that I don’t care about. Like if I have something and I want to move and you tell me I have to pay it off in order to move, I don’t do that. I don’t have time for that. My mentality don’t think like that. I’m ready to go today.
She needs somebody like me in her life. I tried to sign Iggy that’s why I say that. I sent her a tweet, I think, and she thought I was trying to get at her because she’s fine. She kind of gave me the “send my manager, hit my manager.” When I talk to artists, I talk directly to the artist. So she kind of shunned me. But that didn’t make me not like her. I feel like she’s very talented. Artists are not people who know everything that’s why they have a mentor like myself or you have a Clive Davis, an L.A. Reid to hold them down.
JD: I’m the father that Bow Wow never had.
JD: I haven’t spoken to her.
Wendy: She’s married.
JD: That’s for her.
Wendy: That was a moment Jermaine. We had all kind of giggles.
JD: It’s funny because people try to use my life against me. It’s a moment. My life is incredible. I’ve had an amazing career and it’s just getting started. Anything that people say about me, about Janet, about anything that’s gone on in my life, you can’t talk about my life. It’s my life. It’s amazing.
Wendy: How long were you with her? You were with her for like five years or something?
Wendy: Did you ever ask her to marry you?
JD: I think so.
Wendy: Because now she’s married to Wuzz…they live in Dubai or some place…
JD: You looked at me like I’m supposed to know.
Wendy: I’m sorry JD. It would be uncomfortable if you did know because that would mean you hadn’t move on with your life.
Wendy: Are you loving her residency in Vegas?
JD: Yes. That was my idea. They just didn’t take it when I suggested it.
Wendy: Have you ever tried to romance Mariah?
Wendy: You don’t have to be so short with me.
JD: Nah, I’m just saying. You know, they say a lot of times that business people can’t have– that’s my real friend. I’ve known her longer than any husband that she’s had.

It’s rare these days to see musical icons give fans a world tour and an album at the same time (excluding Prince), but of course, leave it to Janet Jackson to do the aforementioned.
After much anticipation and teasing listeners with the J.Cole-assisted “No Sleeep,” which comfortably sits on the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Adult R&B chart, and “BURNITUP!” with Missy Elliott, and the title track, the LP is finally here!
Released yesterday (Oct. 2), Unbreakable is Jackson’s first album in seven years. She reunited with Rhythm Nation producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis on the 19 track project, which features a tribute to her brother Michael Jackson (“Broken Hearts Heal”).
“I think the record is everything she wanted it to be,” Jam told BBC. “So I hope people are accepting of it and enjoy it.”
Unbreakable is available on iTunes or give it a first spin and stream it below via Spotify.
Even when Janet Jackson is touring the world, she’s still in the studio putting in work.
On Monday (Sept. 21) night, Jackson brought out Missy Elliott during her Vancouver stop of her Unbreakable World Tour to debut a new track off of her forthcoming album, Unbreakable.
Titled “BURNITUP!,”the Elliott-assisted track is hot as Jackson’s flaunts her signature vocals and Missy spits thorough bars.
“Working with Janet is unbelievable. Although we are great friends and have been for so long, I am still her biggest fan,” Elliott, 44, said in a statement reported by Us Weekly.
“Sometimes, I still have to pinch myself when I call her and she picks up the phone or texts me because she is still Janet Jackson! The superstar that I would run to the TV to watch her videos and dance moves, so for me I’m honored to be on any Janet record. I’m humbled whenever she asks because she inspires and continues to inspire me, always!”
