Doin’ The Right Thing In Style: Jada Pinkett Covers Essence and Addresses Human Trafficking
Jada Pinkett Smith is no stranger to Essence magazine covers, but the Hollywood wife and mother isn’t just gracing the cover of the mag’s September issue for herself, she’s doing it to raise awareness for the latest task on her plate: battling human trafficking.
“When something speaks to you as brightly and as strongly as this particular issue speaks to me, you just put every resource that you have to move things forward,” she told the magazine. “That’s what we do, we move fast. It’s the entertainment business. You have to move like a rocket. We’re talking about people’s lives…”
Jada already testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee earlier this year, after being encouraged by her daughter Willow to tackle the issue. Now, she’s more than happy to use Essence‘s platform to drive the importance of the issue home—while still knocking down some nasty rumors. As the magazine states:
“Jada Pinkett Smith needs your help. Newly armed as a warrior against human trafficking — even right here in the U.S. — the Hollywood beauty is on a mission to save Black and Brown girls everywhere whose bodies are being sold against their will. She’s also been fighting another war: protecting her family from the intense scrutiny that’s part of the life of a Hollywood star. But she’s standing tall against the drama — the divorce rumors and critiques of her parenting style — and thriving.”

Mobile with a Child Safety Mission
(Fast Company) — As the mobile for health space grows, its issue areas expand as well. The subject of human trafficking has recently caught the eye of one notable mobile health player in Africa, a group called Text to Change. Text to Change is getting ready to roll out its first human trafficking SMS alert campaign in the country of Cameroon, in cooperation with the children-focused local partner, CIPCRE. Text to Change started in 2007 in Uganda and is now expanding to 12 countries throughout the continent. They were one of the early players in mobile for health and their early success helped them win contracts with the likes of UNICEF, while still staying small and grassroots. “In terms of speed and implementation, we can teach larger organizations a lot. We move really fast,” founder Bas Hoefman tells Fast Company. And now that speed is being put to the test in one of the greatest public health threats the world faces today: the trafficking of innocent children for sexual exploitation, an ill that is spreading throughout the country of Cameroon.

New State Human Trafficking Law Would Permit Wiretaps
(Chicago Tribune) — In Chicago-area hotels, truck stops and even suburban homes, children are being sold into prostitution and forced labor, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez said Wednesday. A state law against human trafficking enacted in 2005 — it had previously been strictly a federal issue — has had little impact, in part because it is often difficult to get victims to cooperate, Alvarez said.

Human Trafficking Isn't Just Overseas: It's Alive in D.C. and its Suburbs.
(Washington Post) — Her name was “Elizabeth London,” she said. And, shivering in a short, white skirt and tottering on huge, acrylic heels too big for her little feet, she was standing on a corner in Northwest Washington, about four blocks from the White House, “waiting for a friend.” She was a child, about 15, I guessed. Her makeup was clumsy and clumpy, her long, blond hair was limp. The detective with me agreed that she was a kid, but she had no I.D., so he couldn’t prove it.
