Not every woman is interested in dropping her last name after marriage or even taking their husband’s name at all and quite a few leading ladies had no problem keeping their maiden name entirely. There was no hyphenation or dropping of anything, because the name they were born with was perfectly fine. Unlike these women who kept their husband’s last name after divorce, these women didn’t bother making the change to begin with.

Diana Ross

The diva of all divas, Diana Ross, has been married twice and kept her last name during both marriages. She married music executive Robert Ellis Silberstein in 1971, which led to divorce in 1977. She remarried billionaire shipping magnate Arne Naess, Jr. in 1986 and divorced in 2000. The last name Ross rings bells across the world so it makes perfect sense that she hasn’t changed it.

Mariah Carey

Diva and R&B singer Mariah Carey shocked the world when she announced she married her husband rapper, actor and entertainer Nick Cannon. After struggling to conceive, the happy couple surprised everyone one more time when it was revealed that Carey was pregnant with twins. Once Monroe and Morocco were welcomed into the world, the “Butterfly” singer went to work right away to lose the baby weight. Because she gave birth via Cesarean, Carey was unable to exercise right away. The current “American Idol” judge signed on to be the spokesperson for Jenny Craig and ended up dropping 70 lbs. in six months. “I realize that 90 percent of losing weight is my diet,” Carey said in an interview with Shape magazine about how she lost the extra pounds.

Toni Braxton

Even though Toni and her husband Keri Lewis (you know the light skinned cutie from Mint Condition) separated in November 2009, never making it final hasn’t stopped this Braxton from ‘searching for love’. She’s seemed to have stop searching now that she’s sparked up a flame with… Eddie Murphy! The two have been ‘friends’ for a while now but we all know how the celeb ‘friend’ game goes. One day their mere fans of each other’s work the next day their vacationing together. One thing’s for sure Toni doesn’t believe in waiting for the judge to tell her it is okay to move on!

Too Short

Dirty lyrics are one thing, but Short crossed the line when he gave gross and probably illegal advice to young men on how to take it “to the hole.”

The details are too gross to include here and, thankfully, XXL took the video off their website shortly after this was published, but the “fatherly guidance” included graphic details on what to do with your fingers when you’re alone with a girl. I don’t know how anyone could buy another XXL or Too Short track after that.

Wendy’s Talking Ish Again: Heidi Klum’s Relationship With Bodyguard Is ‘Disgusting’

Wendy has stuck her foot very far up her mouth — yet again — while butting her head all into somebody else’s business. This time the victims of her criticism are Heidi Klum and her bodyguard boo whose relationship  the daytime talk show host called “disgusting.”

Suggesting that there’s no way Heidi didn’t start getting it on with her protector before she and Seal announced their separation in early 2012, Wendy said:

“He’s worked for Heidi in the family for four years. Seal, you know what that means — and not just when you were out of town,” she said. “I don’t think this is a new relationship, do you?”

Then in typical, I’ve never done any wrong in my life Wendy fashion, she added:

“I haven’t reported a story about love this disgusting since Sandra Bullock and that man,” referring to Bullock’s ex-husband Jesse James, who cheated on her up, down, left, right, and sideways.

“It pains me to report stories like this when the woman, in my mind, is clearly in the wrong”

Look, I’m all for pretending like men are the only ones who cheat and all that other men are dogs sexist stuff but Wendy let’s not act like Heidi is the first wife to get it on with someone other than her husband. Yes, what she did or is doing is wrong, if she actually got with the bodyguard before separating from Seal, but let’s not be over-dramatic simply because this is a woman who did something wrong. It happens every day. Settle down Wendy.

Halloween Horrors: Memorable Celebrity Halloween Costumes

*Random Kendra story* When I was in 3rd grade my mother didn’t want us celebrating Halloween or dressing up for it at my school’s Halloween party.  So, my sister Kelli and I decided to hide a costume in my bookbag anyway.  When it came time to get dressed for the party I put on my leotard and a sheer scarf around my hips and when my teacher asked me what I was, I proudly shouted:  “An exotic dancer!!”  Thinking that an “exotic dancer” was a ballerina that did dances “you know, like the ones in Coming to America.”

I mean, who doesn’t like to stunt when you’re going out for Halloween?  Though I embarrassed myself and my mother when she surprised me at school and saw me in my “costume” (oh the shame that covered her face…), some celebrities get to go all out.  Now, with all that said, let’s look at a few celebrities and some of their memorable costumes.

Is Classism Rearing Its Ugly Head? Seal Blasts Heidi For Romancing “The Help”

By now, it’s no secret that Heidi Klum and Seal are going through a highly publicized Hollywood divorce after seven years of marriage and three children together. What seemed to be a quiet split has turned noisy as of late due to Seal’s recent comments about his ex’s choice in men.

Photos of Heidi Klum and her longtime bodyguard canoodling in Sardinia surfaced over the weekend, indicating the two are indeed dating. When asked about the photos by TMZ, Seal had this to say:

“That’s what happens when two people separate, they move on and generally meet other people in their lives.”

That’s the appropriate response, isn’t it? Especially considering the fact that Seal has already been seen dating other women since the couple announced their separation in January.

BUT, it seems that Seal really is not about equal treatment in this case. He went on to say: “Whilst I didn’t expect anything better from him [the bodyguard], I would have thought that Heidi would have shown a little more class and at least waited until we separated first before deciding to fornicate with the help, as it were.”

SMH. Did Seal really admist that he’s an elitist and a classist? And did he insinuate that he would have been happier if Heidi chose to date someone who is more “professional?” This is why more celebs need to understand the significance of keeping their mouths shut when it pertains to personal relationships. I didn’t have a problem with Seal before this incident, but after this comment, I’m really second-guessing his character.

Amid all the speculation of Seal’s “controlling” ways, which has been implied as one of the reasons for the couple’s breakup, one thing the Nigerian-British singer has revealed this weekend is that he has class issues. In the wise words of Tamar, get your life Seal.

What do you think about his comments? Did they make you feel some type of way about Seal?

Heidi Who? Seal Looks Like He Has a New Boo

For someone who didn’t want to get divorced—and who was telling that same story to every news outlet who would listen back in February—Seal sure didn’t take much time moving on from his soon-to-be ex-wife, Heidi Klum.

Pictures of him with another woman purposely being photographed (you can see a friend taking candids in some paparazzi shots) on a yacht somewhere in Italy certainly tell a thousand words, namely, I don’t care who knows or I hope these get back to Heidi. At this point in the game, it’s only been four months since Heidi and Seal announced their split, which by most accounts means it’s awfully soon to have replaced your wife of seven years. But then again, he seemed to not be the one drafted the papers in the first place so maybe this unnamed brunette is his way of coping.

Seal has been pretty mum about his pending divorce since people started questioning why he was running his mouth so much when Heidi hadn’t said a thing, but in a recent interview he told USA Today:

“I’m in an excellent place right now. In a situation like this, your priority is the children. As long as the children are happy, I’m happy.”

He certainly looks happy on that yacht. Check out more pics on TMZ. What do you think about Seal possibly moving on with a new woma already?

Give Me My Money, Honey: Should Women be Forced to Pay Their Ex-Husbands Alimony?

May 1st, 2012 - By Charing Ball

So allegedly Seal is looking for an even split in the marriage.

According to Bossip;

“HEIDI KLUM’s divorce from SEAL is erupting into an ugly battle as the “Kiss From a Rose” singer prepares to go after a huge chunk of her $70 million fortune, say sources. The 38-year-old supermodel filed for divorce April 6, stating they have a post-nuptial agreement, which means they agreed to keep their assets completely separate during their marriage. But Seal has struck back, filing his own documents that make no mention of their post-nup, yet note that California is a community property state — which could entitle him to half of the beauty’s megabucks. “Even though they may have had a post-nuptial agreement, it appears that Seal is going to challenge it,” said a legal strategist. “If he is successful, it could mean big bucks for him in their divorce.

Man, it sure does suck to be married in California.

I kid of course (but then I don’t) however whenever a celebrity divorce makes the pages of a gossip magazines, the discussion that immediately follows involves debate over spousal support and alimony and who deserves what and how much. Interestingly enough, the debate usually centers on some high-profiled celebrity man and his low-profile wife. Public discussion about what should become of communal property generally splits among gender lines: men folk will say, “Why does Kobe’s wife get half? She didn’t win any championships!” Whereas the women will strike back, “Vanessa is entitled to half because she raised the children, held the household down and spent years standing by his side through all his extra-martial affairs.”

All legitimate points but what happens when the breadwinner of the celebrity couple happens to be a woman? Well than that is a whole different story there. Most of the reaction I’ve seen centered on women calling Seal a dirt bag loser for wanting his slice of the matrimony pie. While the men folk, who once were so adamant against spousal support, suddenly have a change of heart and sympathy for the plight of the househusband.

Aside from the Kiss from a Rose song, which I only know from the Batman movie, I can’t recall another song from Seal -but I heard/read he has sold more than 20 million albums.  And I, and perhaps a few others, haven’t really heard anything professional from the Nigerian/Brazilian singer besides being the arm piece to his much more famous and financially astute wife, who has managed to flip her modeling career into a successful reality TV show, among other things.  According to Forbes, Klum has earned $20 million in the last year alone, making her the second-highest paid model.  So it would make sense that is spousal support is coming, Seal would be the recipient, yet folks still have a hard time accepting it.

Westernized, traditionally speaking, men have been the prime breadwinner in the household, therefore the ruler of the family. He was responsible for management of all marital property including his wife, who depended on him to provide her sustenance.  Therefore alimony came about to ensure that the wife was taken care of after divorce. Remember in the old times, women could not own property outside of a Singer sewing machine.

So if a woman’s husband left her, there was a strong possibility that she would be destined to extreme poverty and be literally penniless in the streets.

But times have indeed changed and as we enter the second or third wave of feminism, we are beginning to see a significant number of women, not only reaching financial equality with men, but in some cases, surpassing the opposite gender on the salary scale.  According to a study by the Pew Charitable Trust, 22 percent of men made less money than their wives in 2010 – an 18 percent increase since the 1970s. In some instances, these new financial achievements for women have also been accompanied by gender role reversals in marriages where the woman is outside the home, grinding for the bacon, while the man rears the children and takes care of the homestead.

But like most marriages in the United States, there is a high chance that they will head to divorce. And with that comes more men seeking alimony from their much wealthier spouses. Consider former 98 Degree singer, Nick Lachey, who sought – and was eventually denied – spousal support from ex-wife pop singer Jessica Simpson.  And then there was Janet Jackson, who had to pay her ex hubby Rene Elizondo $15 million, give him the couple’s Mercedes and their five-bedroom Malibu beachfront home.  Not to mention Kirstie Alley, Madonna and Britney Spears all were court-ordered to cough up money each month to…ahem…maintain their ex-hubby’s lavish lifestyles.

As many women in America can go to college, own our own homes and earn big bucks in the corporate world just like men, they can also end up paying their partners hundreds to even thousands of dollars a month in alimony, just like men. Unfortunately it’s the gift and the curse of independence and equality. I,for one, am not in favor of ending spousal support. Despite the advancement in gender equality (at least the ability of a woman to live independently), there are some women – and men – who really need it and had a previous agreement with their spouse that they would stay home and raise the children/tend house. But as we all know, not everyone who gets spousal support necessarily deserves it. Some folks are just looking for a meal ticket. But that’s why it is important that folks, especially folks of means, understand that when you take the vows to spend your entire life with someone, it means the house, the car and the bank accounts too. If not, well you better learn from Klum’s mistake and get a pre-nup. Oh yeah, women qualify for those too.
