Pop Star Provides Hope For Haiti as New President

Well, he’s no Wycleaf Jean but Haiti’s new president also has some pop music roots. The “bad-boy pop star” Michel Martelly was sworn in as Haiti’s new president and his celebrity popularity certainly helped him win the elections marginally.

“Haiti has been sleeping,” Martelly said in his first remarks as president. “Today she will wake up, stand up.”

The island has certainly not recovered from the earthquake which ravaged Port-au-Prince and other areas almost a year and a half ago. Along with addressing the severe economic challenges that plague Haiti, Martelly has vowed to fight corruption by instituting rules and codes to foster transparency .

(The Grio) – On Tuesday, Haiti’s Provisional Electoral Council, or CEP as it is known by its French acronym, will disqualify some of the 34 people who have filed formal applications to become the next president for various reasons. In the past, the thinning of candidates was a routine exercise meant to usher the campaign season. But this year, while the elections are scheduled for November 28, many believe that the CEP’s decision on August 17 will most likely determine the eventual winner.

Wyclef Resigns From Charity Before Beginning Campaign for the Haitian Presidency

(Black Politics On The Web) – Wyclef Jean has stepped down as leader of the embattled aid group he founded as he prepares to formally declare his candidacy for the Haitian presidency. The singer released a statement that he was resigning the chairmanship of Yele Haiti effective immediately Thursday.The Brooklyn, N.Y.-raised entertainer was headed to his native Haiti and was expected to officially file his election papers Thursday afternoon at the provisional electoral council in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.
