When Cornrows Go Horribly Wrong: 9 Celebs Who Never Should Have Messed With Braids

If you’re still wearing cornrows on a consistent basis in 2013, I’m not saying you’re dead wrong, but you might want to think about letting all that go. How about a haircut? Locs? Hell, even Snoop Dogg had to move on to a new style at some point. In all honesty, we all have sat in someone’s chair or between someone’s legs and let them give us an Alicia Keys makeover circa 2001. And maybe we didn’t look as good with them as we thought we did (I for one have a head too damn large for that look and learned that it wasn’t for me with the quickness…), but at least nobody had to see them but a few of our friends and family. Sadly, we all had to see these celebs and their braid fails over the years, and while some tried to hold on as long as they could, they all eventually left the style behind…Good move.

Drop The Flat Iron Like It’s Hot: Summer Hairstyles To Help You Beat the Heat

It is finally summer and with that radiant sun shining bright, those heat-induced hairstyles are not always the best for the sweaty days of summer. The humidity can have your hair puffed up and turned out, and besides, excessive heat on your hair from curling and flat ironing is never a good idea anyway. Here are four alternatives that will help you to back away from the blow dryer, put the flat iron down and save your hair for summer.

1. The Bun ‘do
I absolutely love a good bun ‘do. It can be sleek and sophisticated or flirty and playful. In the summertime, when the heat and humidity may do a number on your hair and make the frizz stand at attention, simply tie a folded head scarf around your head to hold your hair down and add a splash of style.

2. Set Your Hair
Rather than using direct heat to straighten your hair, you can roller set it under the dryer. YouTube offers a ton of tutorials on how to roller set a bevvy of hair textures from relaxed to natural. Alternatively, you can skip the heat all together and roller set your hair with flexi rods to create lush curls. Simply flat twisting your hair down and roller setting the ends will give you big curly hair you are looking for in the morning.

3. Roll, tuck & pin.
Break those bobby pins out and get creative. Day-old curls can be pinned up into new fresh styles. Swoop it to the side or pin the back up for fun retro looks. Go all out and pin your hair up into a mohawk, it’s all about how creative you can get with the bobby pins. Plus, here’s another time where the headband can help to smooth down a look and add a splash of style.

4. Yarn braids
Don’t run away because you don’t know how to braid extensions into your hair. Using yarn is an easy alternative that allows for a better grip than synthetic or human hair and allows the hair braiding novice to complete a look that’s super chic for the summertime. You can braid or twist the yarn into your hair to create long braids that are just in time for the summer. A protective style that’s fly!

Fantasia’s ‘Bittersweet’ Hairstyles: The Good & The Bad

For Fantasia “Bittersweet” was more than just a song. The term also applies to her hair. Since she’s been on our radar from her American Idol days, we’ve watched as her hair changed for both the better and the worse. Check a few of her hair hits…and misses.

OH YEAH!!!! Red hair is definitely fun, but there is something so shocking about the combination of this crimson hue and the style (which looks like her hair has finger waves or something that looks like those Snooki humps) that are just throwing me off. Add that to the fact that you can see her dark roots in the front and that she thought it was cute to rock this black catsuit and I’m pretty much too through.

Hairstyle Dos and Don’ts for Round Faces: Ashanti

"Ashanti"

If you’re a round-faced gal, the perfect hairstyle for you will increase height and decrease width.  Hair can only do so much in regards to the depth of your face, which has the tendency to appear flat. Round faces are known for their soft and less angular bone structure, so if your concern is depth related; you should look into contouring with makeup.

Ashanti is one celebrity with a round face and judging from many of the pictures I came across of her, I think her stylist knows it! A lot of her hairstyles aim to give her face some height and that’s a good thing. I did however come across some no no’s that I will be sharing with you.

A fun part of having hair for black women is changing it up and trying new things. A lot of the inspiration folks get from the styles they dare to try come from the celebrities we see on television, in magazines, and on and on and on. While I personally love my own bountiful mane of hair, there are a number of celebrities out there with natural and relaxed hair that I always find myself being impressed by. My hair idols don’t do the absolute most with their styles (well, not all of ‘em at least), but what they do manage to do all the time is keep their hair looking healthy, strong and beautiful. I don’t know about you, but the women on this list have a good head of hair. Which celebrities hair do you love?
