Barber Gives Boys Free Back-To-School Haircuts For Fine Reading

In Dubuque Park, IA, one barber is strengthening literacy among young boys in his community by dishing out free back-to-school haircuts with one stipulation – the student must read to him.

Holmes, of Spark Family Hair Salon, volunteered his services this past Saturday during the second annual Back-to-School Bash. During the bash, multiple businesses and organizations come together for one reason, to support the community. Courtney Holmes could be seen helping boys sound out words they didn’t quite know yet over the buzz of his clippers.

“I just want to support kids reading,” Holmes told The adults loved his idea.

Kathleen Winfrey brought her two nephews Tayshawn Kirby,9, and  Titan Feeney,10, to swap stories for cuts and the boys were all in.

“I love it. It’s good for our community,” said Winfrey.

Tayshawn could be seen in the barber chair reading Fats, Oils, and Sweets by Carol Parenzan as he told Holmes of how the average person eats 150 pounds of sugar a year.

When it was Titan’s turn, he turned to his younger brother and complimented his new, fresh cut before hopping into the chair. Holmes was not the only one helping the boys read, Caitlin Daniels, a grade-level reading coordinator with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque also stood by to assist any readers having a hard time.

“It’s great. All the kids, they want to have a good haircut to go back to school,” Daniels said. “They’re paying through reading.”

The boys didn’t need to bring their own books since St. Mark Youth Enrichment gave away free books at the Back-to-School Bash. St. Marks also pledged to provide over 1,000 book-bags full of supplies to students in Dubuque.

The event was coordinated by Anderson Sainci who collaborated with various nonprofits and community businesses to bring the event to life.

“The idea is to connect people to people and people to resources,” Sainci said. “It helps all of us to reach our full potential.”

The Back-to-School Bash presented free resources to over 100 people along with before-and after-school activities families could look forward to this school year.

“It’s important that all kids are prepared and ready to start the school year,” Sainci said.

I enjoy a good deal just like the next woman on a budget, but after living and learning the hard way I’ve come to accept that there are just some types of items where going cheap is just not going to get it. A lot of people have grown accustomed to asking for the generic versions of prescription medications at the pharmacy or comparing the ingredient list on a bottle of NyQuil and the drug store’s Nite Time, but going the bootleg, discount, get it for the low-low route on a lot of other things will end up costing you a whole more than you thought you saved.  Think it won’t? Check out this list of products it’s better to just spend the extra cash on.

Know Your Shape: The Best Hair Cuts For Every Face

Choosing the right haircut can be hard. There’s always that risk you take that you’ll hate it and have to let it grow out over the course of a few months. No one wants that. That’s why we’ve put together this handy little guide to the best cut for every face shape:

If your face is round, meaning that the length and width are the same, most cuts that are at least chin length, but ideally longer, will frame rounder face shapes well.  To slenderize the face a few long, choppy layers on straight hair will definitely do the trick. A bit of wave also elongates and gives it some angle. Try a large barreled curling iron to create gentle bumps in big sections. It’s also easy to create this look heat-free. Just make 6-8 large braids with wet hair, keep in overnight and in the morning you’ll have glorious waves.
