Cameron Moore, a graphic designer and Web developer, knows about that firsthand. When finding corporate work became difficult, he used his talents with HTML coding and graphic design to build up his own brand for what became a successful two years of steady full-time freelance work. Moore eventually landed a 9-to-5 as a front-end Web developer, but still managed to start Random Order NYC, a design firm founded with friends that now boasts a client list including Latina Magazine, AMC TV and BlackPlanet. Ugh: the 'Free' in Freelance
(Crain’s) — For two years, Wendy Friedman has tried to collect the $15,000 she says she’s owed for designing sweaters for SoHo fashion label Abaeté by Laura Poretzky, whose clients have included pop star Jessica Simpson.
But the 38-year-old from Manhattan says the company appears to have closed and reopened under another name. She can’t collect a dime, despite a court judgment in her favor. Lawyers now advise her to just walk away.
