-San Bernadino, CA has declared a fiscal emergency and is filing for bankruptcy. The city is the third in California to do so. Compton could be next, with a decision coming September 1. There are questions of whether more cities will follow in these disastrous footsteps as well.

-Target is trying to better reach urban shoppers with new CityTarget stores. Two years in the works, the stores will be two-thirds the size of a normal big-box Target. The stores won’t have items better suited to suburban lifestyles (like lawn products) and will offer fewer options in some categories. But there’ll be special sections for Apple products and wifi for online searches. Stores open July 25.
-A New York Times/CBS News Poll finds that declining confidence in the economy is hurting President Obama’s prospects for re-election. The poll essentially puts President Obama and Mitt Romney in a tie. However, respondents were optimistic that the President can improve the economic situation and felt the President cares more than Romney about average Americans.
-The Emmy nominations have been announced, with cable television taking the lion’s share. Mad Men and American Horror Story had the most nominations with 17. Modern Family, Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones were among the other nominees. New shows like the controversial Girls and Homeland are also in the mix.
