Not Much Savings from Stimulus Money

(AP) — Congressional Republicans say they want to cut federal spending by raiding $45 billion from President Barack Obama’s politically unpopular economic stimulus program. But they won’t be able to get their hands on most of that money.  At most, only about $7 billion of the $814 billion in economic recovery money awarded under the 2009 federal law hasn’t already been spoken for, according to the latest White House estimates. And Republican leaders now acknowledge they would be lucky to identify as much as $5 billion in stimulus-related spending cuts as part of a plan to save taxpayers $2.5 trillion over 10 years.

(Washington Informer) — President Barack Obama reached another significant milestone on the long difficult road toward economic recovery of the economy in the United States when General Motors (G.M.) recently launched one of the largest initial public offerings (IPO) in American history. I believe that the proper stimulus investment in the African American business community will also bring a much-needed economic recovery.  To the astounded pseudo-economists and near-sighted politicians who vociferously criticized President Obama for using federal stimulus funds to reorganize and stabilize G.M., the fact is the stimulus worked. The investment of taxpayers’ dollars worked to save G.M. jobs and to catalyze a financial rebirth of G.M.

Grants, loans and capital investments can provide a crucial boost to a young business, but not every region provides the same level of support. Find out if your state is a good place for entrepreneurs to find the backing they need. In today’s economic climate, even the most experienced entrepreneurs might need a helping hand. But although federal stimulus funding has been used to support ailing automakers and banks, small businesses and startups have had a more difficult time obtaining public funds or loans for their enterprises.
