Vanity on a Whole New Level: FaceTime is Making People Seek Facelifts
It’s one thing to delete a photo of yourself on your phone because it’s not flattering. It’s a whole other to take an image of yourself video chatting to a plastic surgeon, point out what’s wrong with your face (in the image), and then ask him to fix your real face so it looks better on camera. I also think it’s a little suspect for the doctor to do it, but that’s how one DC-based plastic surgeon is racking up business with a procedure called a “FaceTime facelift.”
“Patients come in with their iPhones and show me how they look on FaceTime,” Dr. Robert Sigal said. “The angle at which the phone is held, with the caller looking downward into the camera, really captures any heaviness, fullness, and sagging of the face and neck. People say ‘I never knew I looked like that! I need to do something!’ I’ve started calling it the ‘FaceTime Facelift’ effect. And we’ve developed procedures to specifically address it.”
The procedure is “FaceTime liposuction,” which involves pulling the skin back like in a typical facelift, but without the scar on the chin—because you wouldn’t want anyone to see that when you’re looking into your iPhone. Facelifts are typical for aging adults who want to reclaim a bit of their youth, but younger people are the ones using FaceTime—and the ones seeking these facelifts—which makes this trend all the more troubling.
I’d be lying if I said I thought I look incredible on Skype but that little bit of distortion is not going to make me seek out a medical procedure.
What do you think about this doctor performing FaceTime facelifts? Is he just supplying a need or taking advantage of people’s extreme insecurities?
