Why High Dropout Rate is Everybody’s Problem
(Daily Finance) — When students drop out of college, it’s not just disappointing for them and their parents — it’s also bad news for Uncle Sam, and even for their next-door neighbors. A new study from theAmerican Institutes for Research examined the outcomes for more than 1.1 million full-time students who entered college in 2002 with the best intentions of getting a bachelor’s degree. AIR says nearly 500,000 did not graduate within six years. The quitting spurt is expensive: AIR says those dropouts cost the nation $4.5 billion in lost income, and lost federal and state income taxes.
Advocates: Back to School Push Missing Key Piece
(Chicago News Cooperative) — Chicago Public Schools officials are in the midst of an ambitious campaign to marshal city agencies, retailers and faith-based community organizations in the pursuit of one cause: Getting students back to school. “It all starts on day one,” Jean-Claude Brizard, the district’s chief executive officer, stressed at a press conference announcing the two-week back-to-school blitz, which includes door-to-door outreach, phone banking, robo calls and a Groupon deal intended to equip needy CPS students with school supply kits. Yet a leading homeless advocacy group insists the initiative is missing a critical element: Free first-day rides.
