If you’re anything like me, you probably thought that those pimples that plagued your nose, forehead and chin should have cleared upon high school graduation. But here it is, a decade out of college, and you’re STILL waking up to the white, pustulating monstrosities that no amount of Cover Girl, Mac, or Mabelline will camouflage.
It turns out pimples are more than just a hormonal problem. Combine environmental pollution, make-up, overactive oil glands and 99-cent facial cleanser full of fillers, preservatives and irritants and you, madame, have a problem. Don’t worry we’ve got the solution!

Rashida Jones Teams Up With Dove to Make Friends With Her Hair
In September, Dove teamed up with Rashida Jones (daughter of Quincy Jones) for the launch of its “Make Friends With Your Hair” campaign. The campaign is promoting Dove’s Nourishing Oil Care Collection by focusing on women with dry, rough and frizzy hair. They encouraged “real women” from all over America to send in creative videos describing the struggles they face with their dry, unmanageable hair and have selected three finalists—one of which is a woman of color. Public votes are being accepted until November 28th and the winner will be featured in a Dove Hair TV advertisement.
Check out their videos and let us know who you think should win!
Study: Black Women Love Their Hair More Than Other Women
Yeah, that’s not exactly good news. A new study by Dove found that only 7% of the 1,000 women they surveyed actually like their hair. African American women scored slightly higher at 14%.
The project is part of a beauty campaign featuring actress Rashida Jones and the Make Friends With Your Hair campaign and contest that lets women across the country vent about their hair struggles. The goal is to help them eventually get to a point of loving their hair.
Other findings showed that:
- Hair Care is a higher priority in a woman’s morning routine than eating breakfast (45% versus 41%), applying makeup (39%) and extra sleep (35%).
- When asked how many hair products they use on an average day to manage/tame their unpredictable hair, 58% of women said they use three or more.
- 1 in 5 women have passed on a social event as a result of unpredictable hair.
I feel like I’m neutral on my hair—some days I love it, some days I hate it, and on those days I hate it I will definitely pass on going out. What about you? Are you a part of the 14% of black women who love their hair?
