Chris Rock is becoming quite the political commentator. Today the comedian is becoming far more known for his thoughts on the state of black America rather than his jokes about it, and his latest interview in the August issue of Details proves just that.
Right from the get-go, the mag asked Chis if he had any thoughts on Barack Obama in the upcoming election and he said this:
“I mean, if I want to talk to him, I can call him. Dude, being the first black anything sucks. But the country was in shambles, and he’s cleaning it up. If you properly clean a room, it gets dirtier before it gets cleaner. Ever come back to your hotel room before the maids are finished? My God! Republicans are complaining. Romney’s complaining. But Romney’s rich. He doesn’t know s*** about cleaning.”
OK Jay-Z with Obama on the text. Chris Rock isn’t lying though. Though none of our professions may be on the level of the president of the United States, we’ve all felt that pressure of being the first or only black anything on our jobs. Everybody is watching to see how you’ll handle x,y,or z, sometimes being in the position at all just feel like a test, and it’s obvious some people are just waiting for you to fail, or plotting it themselves. Shout out to the Tea Party. We’ve seen President Obama’s situation is no different despite being placed in his position by thousands of Americans.
Moving on to another Grim topic,Details asked whether it’s too soon for George-Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin jokes. I can’t fathom a time when that would ever fly but since we’ve already heard hoodie humor from various sources I suppose it’s a fair question. Chris rock responded by saying:
“There’s no joke there, unfortunately. It’s sad. When you get old, it’s like, “Damn it, I’ve seen this.” I’m from Bed-Stuy. I marched for Yusuf Hawkins, you know? I don’t totally agree with Bill Cosby. He said it wasn’t racial, it’s a gun issue. Well, it’s a gun-racial issue. You know what makes you approach a six-foot-three black guy in the middle of the night? A gun. Paul Blart’s not supposed to have a gun.”
Chris also talked about why he hasn’t been on a comedy tour since 2008 and it seems the funny man is taking a greater liking to making documentaries. People are still talking about “Good Hair” and now he’s working on a new project called Credit Is the Devil. When asked why that topic, he said:
“Because credit is the devil. Dude, I’m rich—and I live in f***ing Jersey. I had two cars in 1996, and I got two cars now. I live way below my means.”
Maybe they can add that film to the curriculum for athletes signing new contracts.
What do you think about Chris’s interview and his comment on being the first black anything?
