Sun-Times Media Cuts Half-Dozen Staffers

(Crain’s) — Sun-Times Media Group LLC continued to cut editorial staff jobs, pursuing a plan to shrink its workforce as it centralizes its network of newspapers.  The company told the union representing some workers at its papers that it expected to cut about six editorial employees, said Lynne Stiefel, president of the Chicago Newspaper Guild. She thought the cuts would all be at the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper but wasn’t positive about that, she said. Sun-Times CEO Jeremy Halbreich couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Braun Lashes Out at Sun-Times’ Steinberg

(Chicago Sun Times) — Mayoral hopeful Carol Moseley Braun lashed out against Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg on Wednesday in response to a column criticizing the former U.S. senator.  “He is a drunk and a wife beater, and that’s a matter of record. I didn’t make that up. It’s the truth,” Braun said at a news conference called to outline her public safety platform. “You know that old ‘Give ‘em hell Harry.’ I tell the truth, and they think it’s hell. I’m just going to tell the truth about these things. He is a drunk and a wife beater, and he insulted the entire African-American community in Chicago. And the Sun-Times, particularly based on its demographic . . . ought to do better by Chicagoans than to give this man a continual platform for his divisive rantings in the newspaper.”

Blacks Stage Protest Against the Chicago Sun Times

(Chicago Now) — On Tuesday, Dec. 28th at 12 Noon a cross section of leadership from the Black coommunity will stage a public demonstration and press conference against the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper at 350 N. Orleans near the Chicago River. African-American clergy, business owners and community leaders expressed outrage over a column written by Neil Steinberg in the Monday edition of the paper.  The column ridiculed mayoral candidate Carol Moseley Braun, Chicago’s first Black Mayor Harold Washington, as well as other black politicians, and the newspaper, N’DIGO.  Protesters are calling for Steinberg’s dismissal and are asking for a meeting with the Sun-Times editorial board regarding allegations that while The Sun Times enjoys significant financial support from majority Black communities that the paper does not reflect the proper staffing of Black reporters or sensitivity when covering Black community issues.
