Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can buy you nice hairstyles. That’s the thought that runs through my head everytime I watch an episode of one of my favorite reality shows, Braxton Family Values. I wonder about you: the overpaid hair stylist who is failing so miserably at her job of making her clients look presentable. I know that there are least two of you though. One of you is doing a fine job making the lesser-known/poorer sisters look good. No doubt Traci, Trina and Towanna heads are always on point.
But when I see Tamar rock a grotesquely bad blond strangly weave along with her Birkin bag or when I see Toni – Grammy-Award winning Toni Braxton whose been in the game 10 plus years, wearing a bodaciously fake-looking long wig – I wonder, when is the intervention going down? Because the fact that these two high profile ladies can air their dirty laundry on national television, without the tender loving care of a good stylist as evinced in bad wigs, weaves, and sometimes overly done make-up, is astonishing. Considering that the Black hair care industry is saturated with great stylists, there’s no excuse for these two millionaires to ever look off during the two month shooting schedule for the season.
As a hair stylist, you should take pride in your work. I’m not saying that you don’t, but you obviously need to work on your craft. Toni looks great with short hair but when she’s going for the wigs, you should be able to guide her to something more believable and style the wig accordingly. Tamar is not totally off either but for her to be talking that constant, egotistical talk about her own greatness, her crown needs to match all that hype.
I’m sure the Braxtons have gotten some constructive criticism about their manes. Hopefully, they’ll take it to heart and hire more professionally advanced hair dressers. It worked for Beyonce after all. Remember that in her first years of mainstream popularity, she got a lot of flack from her subpar hair game. She ultimately had to ask her own mother to step down as her personal stylist and the results were positively dramatic. We never see Bey with a bad hair day and she’s in the limelight much more frequently than Toni or Tamar.
As Braxton Family Values gears up for another season, I hope that you’ll do them a favor and step aside. Hair is critical to a woman’s look and it’s only fair that you improve your skills before dealing with such high profile clients. I mean, Toni should’ve known better considering her age and experience, but obviously, she needs more guidance.
By freeing up some of your time , you can study the landscape of hair design and improve your skills so that when you get the opportunity to work with other high profile clients in the future, you’ll be prepared to take them, and their manes, to the top.
