To be perfectly honest, Janelle Monáe can do no wrong. With a classic and effortlessly chic sense of style, the self-proclaimed Android and Wondaland Records front woman has been slaying the scene from head-to-toe since she marveled us with her now trademark pompadour and black and white tuxedo.
However, in the past few years Monáe has been switching her style but never roaming too far away from her timeless look. There was the beautiful crimson Tadashi Shoji cape she wore to the 2014 Met Gala that was to die for. And we can’t forget her newly signature WondaBraid that we’ve seen in various styles on red carpets and music videos.
But like all artists, the “Yoga” chanteuse continues to evolve. Just last week, Janelle and her Wondaland cohorts were invited by President Barack Obama and the FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, to the Nordic State Dinner at the White House. And of course, they came in their best ‘fits. Monáe wowed and surprised us all with a slightly above chin textured bob — her natural tresses coiled perfection.
No word on if her usual hairstylist Caprice Green is the mastermind behind this look, but we definitely are loving it! What do you think? Sound off in the comments below, and remember to keep it cute!
When it comes to hair, one moment a style is in and the next it’s out. Basically, like all elements of head-to-toe fashion, hair is a never-ending cycle, where reinventing old styles for a trendy, ultra-modern update is a must.
Recently, Essence snagged highly sought after celebrity hairstylist Larry Sims to talk all things hair. Primping the manes of many leading ladies in the limelight, Sims is true pro at taking a simple style from zero to red carpet-ready real quick.
The stylist also dished on his favorite trends at the moment, highlighting Kerry Washington’s choppy, mid-length bob to Lupita’s ever-changing natural ‘do. “They’re breaking the general sexy hair barriers and I love it,” he said. “I also am all about texture and embracing your hairs natural movement.”

For the remainder of red carpet season, Sims is excited to one-up his past styles. “I’m most excited about seeing how creative these women can be in terms of taking risks and being non-traditional in their hair and style as a whole,” he shared. “They’re pressing the envelope and it makes my job even more exciting by helping them create these spontaneous looks.”
In honor of his expert skill set that we all love, we’ve curated a list of four different hairstyles we’re digging and will surely be trending once springtime hits. Ladies, get ready for some hair-spiration!
I don’t know about you but I was so pleasantly surprised to discover #EggPlantFriday on Instagram. It made for a very nice Freaky Friday treat. A very nice one indeed. It was just nasty enough to catch my attention but not vulgar enough to make you feel like you were looking at something pornographic at work.
In case you missed the trend, the hashtag featured men knowingly and unknowingly showcasing the print of their penises inside their pants. It let me further know that God is real. It was glorious.
But nothing lasts forever.
When I suggested a coworker check out the hashtag just a few weeks later, #EggPlantFriday had taken on an entirely different meaning. Instead of just posting the print, men were out her posting pictures of their raw (and sometimes flaccid) man meat on the gram. Not.Cool. It not only ruined the point of the hashtag, it alerted Instagram administrators to the foolishness.
And in response, IG completely shut down the hashtag.
If you’d like to relive the glory days, check out some of the better #EggPlantFriday posts here.
*Pours out some e-liquor to the death of this hashtag. *
I can hear it now: “Who cares? Ashanti isn’t even relevant!” That may or may not be true, but she looks good!
Today is the singer’s 33rd birthday and she’s been celebrating all weekend! She rang in her birthday by hosting a huge birthday bash at Lavo in Las Vegas. Joined by her momager Tina Douglas, her dad and other guests, Shani, as she’s affectionately known, rocked an extremely sparkly Jovani Fashions dress and Ruthie Davis Shoes.
Her new bob was done by celebrity stylist Oscar James, who also tames the locs of Nikki Minaj, Jennifer Hudson and countless others. We’ll have to get a closer look to see if it was her hair that was cut or if he just did his thing on the weave (we know how much you all care).
On Friday night, Ashanti’s friends and family surprised her with a pre-birthday party at SL night club in NYC. This is the second year in a row they’ve managed to “surprise” her for her birthday. Her birthday cake chronicled her music career by having pictures (likely edible) of each album on it.
The singer is still working on her new album that is supposed to be released on her own label, Written Entertainment. Unfortunately, it’s been pushed back a few times and as of now, there’s no telling when it will actually come out.
But in this moment, she seems to just be having fun living life! Check out the next page for a couple of pictures from Ashanti’s pre-birthday bash!
Ohhhh where to begin? There are so many great moments from this smash comedy that it is hard to put into a short list. If yours isn’t here, feel free to add in the comments!
Instead of who’s that girl, I’m really wondering, where is that girl? Eve has been on MIA mode for a while, but when she pops back up on the scene on red carpets for swanky events, her hair is always different. And on top of being different, her ‘dos are usually the most intriguing and vivid points of her whole look. From really short firetruck red pixie cuts to Goldilocks braids, Eve’s hairstyles are as versatile as her rhymes (which I’m waiting to hear again…). So check out her looks that have been winners and losers over the years. It might “Blow ya mind!” Get it? No?
Just a few months ago, it was Summer and you made the big chop, natural or just plain ‘ol short, that you had been thinking about for months on end. Everyone was excited, surprised, and inspired, including yourself. But now it’s Winter, and that short cut has been working your last nerves. It’s growing back irregularly or too fast, and now you don’t know what direction to go in. Should you let your hair grow back or keep cutting? Should you put braids in to avoid the harsh Winter wind? Why is your hair so boring all of a sudden? These thoughts are prevalent around this time of year when a fluffy hat is your best friend and your hair is dryer than a cactus. So to help alleviate the stress, here are a few options for styles short haired ladies can try for the rest of this season. Some you’ll like, some you’ll hate, but whatevs, at least you now have options.
