Encore, Encore: Will Explains Why He Slapped That Reporter

Source: BlackVoices.com
Will Smith visited “The Late Show” (weeknights, 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS) Monday night to promote his new movie, “Men In Black 3.”
David Letterman, of course, wanted the inside story on Smith’s recent tussle with a journalist in Moscow. Walking the “MIB 3″ premiere press line, Smith slapped the male reporter after he tried to kiss the actor.
“It was just awkward, Dave,” Smith said. “They were like, ‘Oh, no, we’re sorry, you know. It’s just his ‘schtick,’ you know. And I said, ‘well, that’s why his a** got schtuck.’”
“Men In Black 3″ hits movie theaters Friday, May 25th.

Officials Urge FAMU to Keep Band Suspended While Investigation Continues
Source: AP Photo from Black Voices
The longtime director of Florida A&M University’s famed marching band announced his retirement Thursday, while a top state official urged the university to keep the band suspended while investigations continue into a drum major’s death.
The band, its future clouded by the beating death of Robert Champion, appeared unlikely to take the field again anytime soon.
Frank Brogan, the chancellor of Florida’s state university system, wrote a blunt letter to FAMU President James Ammons urging him to keep the band suspended. Ammons was expected to discuss the fate of the band at a special meeting of the university board of trustees planned Monday.
Meanwhile, Ammons disclosed more than 100 band members weren’t even enrolled FAMU students at the time of Champion’s death, a new revelation shaking the Marching 100 whose storied history included performing at Super Bowls and inaugural parades.
Solomon Badger, chairman of the FAMU board, said he hopes Ammons would announce he is keeping the suspension intact for the near future.

Study Finds Teachers Give Less Feedback to Minority Students

From BlackVoices.com
Black and Latino students may be getting less critical, but helpful, feedback from teachers than their white counterparts, a new educational study indicates.
“The social implications of these results are important; many minority students might not be getting input from instructors thatstimulates intellectual growth and fosters achievement,” study researcher Kent Harber, a Rutgers-Newark psychology professor, said in a press release.
This positive bias in feedback to minority students may be contributing to the achievement gap between white and minority students, a stubborn national problem, Harber said.
The study “tested” 113 white middle-school and high-school teachers in two public school districts, one middle class and white, and the other working class and racially mixed. Both are located in the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tri-state area.

Can a Workplace Crush Cost Me a Promotion?

This woman has a work related situation she really needed some help with. She spoke with Black Voices’ Judy Smith. Check out her dilemma below:
Question: I worked at a department stores in Manhattan until my mom got cancer. Now that Mom is in remission, I am going back to work, but I have a problem. One of the Assistant Store Managers was really great about letting me ask questions, learn about what he does, helping me when I needed it, and even just joke around. He always treated me and my coworkers with respect. However, before I left, some of my coworkers, supervisors, and department managers mentioned a belief that I may be personally attracted to this ASM. While he is a nice guy, he is my manager and I try to keep things professional between us. I don’t know how to handle this, especially since I will be looking for a promotion in the near future, and I don’t want these rumors to hurt my chances at getting it. Would you please help?
See what Judy Smith had to say in response at Black Voices.com.
