Chanel Carroll — “Actress. Pop Culture Enthusiast. Professional Award Show Commentator. Star on the Rise.” — has taken a tweak to Beyonce’s “Partition” and created “Tuition.”
“For four whole years I was at the club. Now I’m out of grace and that interest up.” Sing it, girl.
In related news, Sallie Mae reported an 18 percent drop in first quarter profits yesterday in large part due to the costs related to its loan management company Navient. Net income for Sallie Mae fell to $279 million, but on a high note for us, delinquency on loans fell to 3.4 percent, the lowest rate since 2008.
On a not-so-positive note, new expert analysis says that repayment programs based on income may not really save borrowers in the long run.
“If income-driven repayment were mandatory, some borrowers would end up carrying debt for many more years and paying more over the life of their loans,” said Lauren Asher, president of TICAS, in a statement. There’s a move now to make the income-based option the default for borrowers, which, TICAS warns, would not be to the borrower’s benefit. Having that debt could prompt many to delay things like homeownership as well, says US News & World Report.
Further research shows “low-income students who attended more expensive colleges would receive a disproportionate share of benefits because more of their debt would be forgiven.”
Sigh… “Oh Sallie Sallie.”
We can’t say we didn’t see this coming. After showing up and performing at each other’s shows frequently and Jay Z mentioning that a duo tour with his wife Beyoncé was starting to “make sense” in an interview with Hot 97, there are rumblings that music’s first couple are embarking a stadium tour as soon as this summer.
Sources told The New York Post’s Page Six that Beyoncé and Jay Z tour would start in late June with the couple performing in New York on July 4.
I guess there’s no rest at the kingdom because both of them just came off tour. Jay performed 52 dates for his “Magna Carta…Holy Grail” tour in January and Bey just closed a whopping 132 shows for “The Mrs. Carter Show” in March.
I agree this does make sense for them at this time and there are a lot of salty…or eager Bey fans who want to hear her perform songs from her latest surprise album.
All I know is tickets are about to be cray-zee.
What do you think about a tour with these two? Will you try to check them out?
We told you over the weekend that Beyoncé hopped on stage with sister Solange during Solo’s performance at Coachella. Of course, that wouldn’t be the only stop Bey (who was just named the most important person in music right now by People) would make in Indio, California. Along with her family (Blue sat this one out and Mama Tina took her place), she took in the sights, sounds, and flowing drinks that were made available to folks at the popular festival, and it looks like she had a very good time. Quite a few pictures from this weekend were shared on Beyoncé’s Tumblr, which included Mama Tina and Solange getting their boogie on, and Bey and Jay taking their private jet to the festival. Must be nice! Check out a wealth of colorful shots here and on the next couple of pages.
If you skipped out on Coachella this year you might be kicking yourself in the butt right now. Last night, in a rare occurence, Beyonce surprised fans at the annual outdoor concert and hit the stage to perform with her sister Solange.
Bey joined her baby sister during the final act of her set for what was quite possibly the cutest sisterly dance routine we’ve seen in a minute.
Dancing along playfully to “Losing You,” we love that the sisters looked like they were having so much fun together on stage, as opposed to performing a heavily rehearsed routine. And you could feel the love between the two who were all smiles during the set, ending the show with a huge hug.
Bey actually wasn’t the only mega-star to surprise Coachella attendees last night. Her hubby, Jay Z, also snuck up on fans during Nas’ set and, of course, massive screaming and yelling ensued. Check out Beyonce and Solange below. Cute right?
Beyonce is one of the most recognizable celebrities in the world so it comes as no surprise that she is also the subject of incredible speculation and some of Hollywood’s most ridiculous rumors. Though Queen Bey seems to take it all in stride, we couldn’t help but call out some of the most insane, off-the-wall and absolutely ludicrous whispers even a Beyhive hater wouldn’t believe. So without further adieu, her are the most ridiculous beyonce rumors to hit the web.
Six years of marriage is worth at least a nice dinner somewhere fancy, but if you’re one of the wealthiest couples on the planet, it’s worth a tropical trip to the Dominican Republic. Now that the Mrs. Carter World Tour has ended, Beyoncé and Jay Z had time to take Blue Ivy and jet to the DR for an extended family vacation.
According to E! Online, at one point in their vacation, the couple was spotted at a local bar at the Casa de Comp resort mingling with other patrons:
A source tells E! News, “They were sitting at the bar,” adding that at one point, Jay Z tapped a man on the back who was “wearing a Brooklyn Nets shirt, and said ‘cool shirt man.’ ” The insider also noted that the couple looked happy and in love, and sharing that Beyoncé “looked beautiful” (as if we would think otherwise).
Jay was also reportedly spotted by people as he pushed Blue on a swing on the playground at the resort.
As cute as all that sounds, you can actually see how much fun the couple had because quite a few photos were shared through Beyoncé’s Tumblr of time the couple spent together, them playing with the growing Blue Ivy (in her colorful swimsuits), and Bey by herself, reflecting. Check all that out on the next couple of pages. As Jay would say, life is but a beach chair!
“He’s Probably Wearing It To Say He’s Proud Of His Family” Insight On The Jay Z 5 Percenter Medallion
From The Grio
Jay Z turned more than a few heads rocking a gold 5 Percent Nation medallion at a Brooklyn Nets game over the weekend.
The New York Post reported that some members of the radical Islamic group were displeased, because Hov is not a practicing member of their faith.
But what some of the media coverage around this latest ‘controversy’ has missing is the long-standing connection between hip-hop and the 5 Percenters — and Jay’s own background with the group.
Founded in 1963 by former Nation of Islam member Clarence 13X (Clarence Smith), the Five Percent Nation (also known as The Nation of Gods and Earths) came together in Harlem against the backdrop of the civil rights movement.
Much like the NOI, the Five Percenters integrated Islamic teachings with messages of black empowerment and social reform.
Practitioners count themselves among the 5 percent of people who are righteous teachers of truth, while they believe another 10 percent of the population controls the remaining 85 using false teachings.

‘Men Are Free And Women Are Not:’ Beyoncé Talks Sexual Liberation & Gender Equality With Out Magazine
When Beyoncé released her fifth studio album this past summer, fans were exposed to a more sensual side of the singer. On one hand, some people like Grammy Award-winning producer Pharrell praised the singer for setting mother and wives free with her sexual lyrics.
“Only a momma can talk like that. Only a wife can talk like that. That is your strength,” he told her. “You just ran through jail and let all the women out cuz. You set women free!”
On the other hand, the married mother has also been criticized for her risqué lyrics. She recently covered the Power issue of Out magazine. During her interview she addressed the double standard when it comes to genders and sexuality and why she was so determined that make her latest album her most honest one. Check out some of her interview highlights below.
On double standards in regard to sexuality:
“There is unbelievable power in ownership, and women should own their sexuality,” she explains. “There is a double standard when it comes to sexuality that still persists. Men are free and women are not. That is crazy. The old lessons of submissiveness and fragility made us victims. Women are so much more than that. You can be a businesswoman, a mother, an artist, and a feminist—whatever you want to be—and still be a sexual being. It’s not mutually exclusive.”
On wanting her fifth studio album to be honest:
“While I am definitely conscious of all the different types of people who listen to my music, I really set out to make the most personal, honest, and best album I could make. I needed to free myself from the pressures and expectations of what I thought I should say or be, and just speak from the heart.”
On advocating for human rights and equality:
“Being that I am a woman in a male-dominated society, the feminist mentality rang true to me and became a way to personalize that struggle…But what I’m really referring to, and hoping for, is human rights and equality, not just that between a woman and a man. So I’m very happy if my words can ever inspire or empower someone who considers themselves an oppressed minority…We are all the same and we all want the same things: the right to be happy, to be just who we want to be and to love who we want to love.”
On being extremely ambitious about putting out the new album:
“I was recording, shooting videos, and performing on the tour every night, all at the same time. At some point I felt like, ‘What am I doing? Is this too ambitious?’ Even the day the record was to be released I was scared to death. But I also knew if I was that scared, something big was about to happen.”
“When I recorded ‘XO’ I was sick with a bad sinus infection. I recorded it in a few minutes just as a demo and decided to keep the vocals. I lived with most of the songs for a year and never re-recorded the demo vocals. I really loved the imperfections, so I kept the original demos. I spent the time I’d normally spend on backgrounds and vocal production on getting the music perfect. There were days I spend solely on getting the perfect mix of sounds for the snare alone. Discipline, patience, control, truth, risk, and effortlessness were all things I thought about while I was putting this album together.”
At Pepsi, Bozoma “Boz” Saint John was responsible for bringing in such celebrity endorsers as Beyonce, Kanye, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, Katy Perry and Michael Jackson.
Now Saint John is joining Beats Music as senior VP and head of global marketing. She will be in charge of all initiatives, from brand and performance marketing to collaborations with AT&T, Target and Beats Electronic, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
“When I was in the 10th grade I decided to run for a position on the student council with the campaign slogan ‘Nuthin but a Boz thang’ so you might say joining Beats Music is like coming full circle,” said Saint John. “I’ve been working my whole career to get here! I’m thrilled, and ready to win.”
Over at Pepsi, she was the head of the music and entertainment marketing group at Pepsi-Cola North America. There she made major moves such as spearheading multiple 360-degree integrated branding programs that targeted tastemaker consumers through music, film, TV, print, online, grassroots, events and retail vehicles.
She was also VP marketing for fashion label Ashley Stewart and traditional advertising agency management at Arnold Worldwide and Spike Lee’s SpikeDDB.
Saint John has also been acknowledged for her talents outside of the companies she’s worked for. She was named one of Billboard’s Top Women in Music, and Top Executives 40 Under 40; Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People; Ebony Magazine’s 100 Top Executives; and graced the cover of AdWeek.
Born in Ghana and raised in Colorado, Saint John graduated from Wesleyan University with a B.A. in English and African-American Studies.
This week, we were happy to announce Lupita Nyong’o is always winning. The highly regarded cosmetic business, Lancome revealed Nyong’o will be their new spokeswoman. Besides Nyong’o, Yandy Smith of LHHNY had a win of her own. She bailed her fiancé Mendeecees Harris out of jail, allowing him some much needed family time. Speaking of reunions and love, Drake and Rihanna have become very close again. Yesterday, the rapper released a new song that may be about their romance. Unfortunately this week, the news made us roll our eyes many times over. Alexsandra Wright, Beyonce’s half brother’s mother claims she and her son Nixon are now homeless. Marie Claire told the world Kendal Jenner took cornrows to a “new epic level”, causing an uproar with Black Twitter.
When not annoyed, we were sad to hear the progress of a case regarding a teen boy who was shot for sneaking into his girlfriend’s house. To top the week off, we cheered for a New York teenager who was accepted into all the Ivy League universities.
This is, as the church folks would say, Lupita’s season. The fashion and beauty industry’s obsession with this young lady has not letting up. The Oscar winning actress has been named the new face of makeup brand, Lancome. Lupita will be the first black ambassador for Lancome which has featured Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penelope Cruz and Lily Collins as former spokeswomen.
Drake and Rihanna have been getting quite cute and cozy lately: holding hands, going out on dinner dates while jetsetting around the world for his tour, wearing similar clothes, and spotted having fun together. In his new song, Drake ran off his thoughts about a lot of things; many people are saying the song was something of an ode to the Bajan bad girl, and we agree.
