A Sound Business: Black-Owned Beverly Hills Jazz Club Hits High Note
A new African-American-owned Beverly Hills jazz club is making some noise. H.O.M.E. (House of Music & Entertainment), one of the few black-owned jazz clubs around, is becoming a hot spot in Los Angeles.
Owned by aspiring drummer Dennis “D. Anthony” Robertson, H.O.M.E. opened only weeks ago, in November. Robertson, who got his start promoting acts at B.B. King’s at Universal Studios before delving into management, aims to make H.O.M.E. (which has the cool website HOME90210.com) the premier venue for jazz in Los Angeles.
Located just a block from tony Rodeo Drive, H.O.M.E. is in the heart of Beverly Hills. The venue has 250-plus seats, and so far it’s holding its own against competitors such as the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood and Herb and Eden Alpert’s Vibrato in Bel Air.
Robertson takes the music seriously. He has some of the best sound engineers in town working full time at the club. “The club recently acquired a Yamaha Concert series piano, which is more than seven feet long and rivals any found around here,” according to L.A Weekly.
He has been able to attract a consistent clientele not only because of the music and location but also the food. Robertson describes his approach as “combination of an intimate concert setting and true fine dining,” which, he tells the newspaper, L.A. lacks. Robertson lured in a noteworthy chef, Shawn Davis, to design the menu, which includes entrees like caviar-chive salmon and rack of lamb.
H.O.M.E. offers a weekday jazz lunch (with solo piano) and is planning a Sunday afternoon “Jazz Mystery Theater” with music and audience participation.

Diana Ross Denied Service At Beverly Hills Restaurant?
Diana Ross, the legendary Supremes frontwoman, allegedly made a scene last Thursday at a Beverly Hills restaurant after refusing to wait to be seated.
According to the New York Post, upon arriving at Italian restaurant La Scala for lunch, Ross was told she would have to wait to be seated until her daughter arrived.
Ross reportedly refused, and walked to a booth and sat down. Management informed the diva of their seating policy: Incomplete parties will not be seated unless a reservation has been made. She was also told that if “she cut the line and sat before her daughter arrived, she would not be served.”
See what happened once Diana’s daughter arrived on The Grio.
Oprah Gets Her Good Samaritan On And Treats Homeless Man To Fancy Dinner
Oprah recently mustered up a little bit of her angel network magic while dining at the fancy Scarpetta restaurant in Beverly Hills. The media mogul was reportedly out enjoying a five-course meal on the restaurant’s patio with four OWN execs when a man came up to her and asked, “Oprah can you help a homeless guy get a bowl of soup, please?”
Without hesitation, Oprah responded “Please, can we get him some money, get him a meal.” The man introduced him self as Eddie and after Oprah said “God bless you, Eddie” one of the OWN execs blessed him with an unknown amount of cash (it was a wad). Scarpetta’s staff also brought the man a feast to partake of.
Some of us might do this on a daily basis but most people are quick to ignore the homeless people they come in contact with. It’s good to see Oprah isn’t one of them. Moral of the story? Ask and ye shall receive.

Jennifer Hudson To Pay Tribute To Whitney At Grammy’s
In honor of Whitney Houston, who passed away suddenly on the eve of the Grammy Awards Saturday February 11th at the age of 48, Jennifer Hudson is scheduled to perform a special tribute for her during the awards show.
Though some of the Grammy plans had to be altered to pay tribute to Whitney, there was some that went on as planned in remembrance of her. Her longtime mentor Clive Davis went ahead with his annual concert at the same hotel where her body was found. He dedicated the evening to her and asked for a moment of silence as a photo of the singer, hands wide open, looking to the sky, appeared on the screen.
Houston had been at rehearsals for the show Thursday, coaching singers Brandy and Monica, according to a person who was at the event but was not authorized to speak publicly about it. Two days ago, she performed at a pre-Grammy party with singer Kelly Price.
In a statement, Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow said Houston “was one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades.”
“Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs,” Portnow said. “A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice.”
A Tribute To Whitney Houston: ‘I Will Always Love You’
Picture It: Brooklyn, New York. 1986. Unity Catholic School. The stage? My 1st grade class.
This was the year I “met” Whitney and she changed my life. At the end of every school day, my teacher Mrs. Eversley would ask if there was anyone who wanted to perform in front of the class. Perhaps there were others who did but at this point I don’t remember; what I do know is that almost every day, without fail, I sang “The Greatest Love of All.” Though I don’t remember their names or faces now, I even had two back-up singers. The entire point is that Whitney Houston and her voice practically changed my life. Whitney made me feel like I could sing (my teacher never stopping me from my almost daily performance didn’t hurt either).
Essence Names ‘Black Women in Hollywood’ Honorees
Every year Essence holds a luncheon during the week leading up to the Academy Awards to honor black women in Hollywood, and this year the magazine has chosen to recognize some well-known actresses who had a huge breakout year in 2011.
Kerry Washington will be honored with the Vanguard Award, recognizing her impressive career. In April, she’ll star in the ABC drama “Scandal,” and she’ll also appear in Quentin Tarantino’s new film, “Django Unchained.”
Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner Octavia Spencer will receive the award for Breakthrough Performance for her work in “The Help.” “Mission Impossible” and “Jumping the Broom” star Paula Patton will be honored with the Shining Star Award, and “Foxy Brown” actress Pam Grier will be given the Legend Award. Shonda Rhimes, creator and executive producer of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice” will receive the Visionary Award. ABC recently ordered a pilot for Rhimes’ new drama series, “Gilded Lillys” and last fall, the network purchased their fourth Rhimes series, “The Circle.”
The luncheon will take place Feb. 23 at the Beverly Hills Hotel, with live streaming on Essence.com from 11:30 am to 12:30pm PST.

Does Zoe Saldana Already Have a New Boo?
It was just Monday that we found out Zoe Saldana and her long-time ex-boyfriend/fiancé broke up. Three days later, the actress already appears to be nice and cozy with a new man.
According to Rumorfix.com, the two were first seen leaving a Michael Kors event in LA, and later had dinner at Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills. The snapshots of the pair walking arm-in-arm and holding hands will do nothing to quiet speculation that this could in fact be the reason for her split from Keith Britton. I’m anxious to find out just who this mystery man is.
What do you think about Zoe Saldana being out and about with a new man already? Too soon?

Forbes’ List of Millionaire Metropolises
(Forbes) — Facebook, Zynga, LinkedIn and other high flying Bay Area start-ups have launched their founders and investors into the billionaire stratosphere (at least on paper). Over the last year, the social network revolution has made tycoons out of the likes of Sean Parker, Eduardo Saverin, Mark Pincus and Reid Hoffman. Last summer, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg wasricher than Apple’s Steve Jobs. Today, he’s wealthier than bothGoogle guys, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, too. But while Silicon Valley basks in the golden glow of the wealth spotlight, Houston, TX is quietly minting new millionaires at a fast pace. For the last two years Houston has enjoyed more growth in the number of High Net Worth Individuals–people with at least $1 million in investable assets (primary homes don’t count)–than any other U.S. city.
