The stars of Black Hollywood were aligned last night in Los Angeles at the 2012 BET Awards. With Samuel L. Jackson at the helm, the best in the business got to party on one of music’s biggest nights. Kanye West took the stage, D’Angelo returned sounding better than ever, and Cissy Houston delivered an emotional gospel tribute to her fallen star, Whitney Houston. Glam gowns like Bey‘s and Mariah‘s seemed to be the look of the night, but La La Anthony and Monica rocked out in pants just as lovely.

Not only was the show one of the most enjoyable nights in BET Awards history, it was also one of the most stylish.

Run That Back! 7 ‘Special’ Moments From the 2012 BET Awards

We talked about the performances at the BET Awards last night, but there’s a lot more to the show than artists getting on stage and singing their favorite hits, and anyone whose ever seen the show before knows some of the best moments are the ones that aren’t planned.

The BET Awards still may not be all that everyone wants it to be, but you have to admit last night’s show moved a lot further away from looking like an upscale hood picnic a la the Source Awards to an awards show worth attending—and watching for those of us who were at home. Perhaps the best thing about last night was there was a lot of love in the audience and on stage and just in case you missed it, we’re gonna run that love back for you. Also, since you know “special” can have two different meanings, we’re also going to throw in a few of those huh? moments we could’ve done without. Check the recap:

Jay-Z and Kanye’s Bromance

If you have no idea what a Bromance is, Google “Jay-Z and Kanye West.” If you want to see Kanye’s face light up like a kid on Christmas morning, Google “Jay-Z, Kanye West, BET Awards.” Apparently Jay-Z got swamped by LA traffic last night, so when he and Ye won one of the first awards of the night, Kanye went on stage to accept by himself—or so he thought. Just as he was saying he wished Jay was there, the dapper Mr. Carter walked out on stage and they embraced like two old friends who hadn’t seen each other in years rather than artists who were sitting right next to each other in the front row. Cue Mary J’s Real Love.

There was also the hilarious moment when the two took the stage again for their song “Otis” and Jay had jokes. He spoofed Kanye’s infamous MTV Award/Taylor Swift catastrophe when Ye started giving his acceptance speech, cutting him off by saying, “Kanye I’m gone let you finish but…” It was a good time.

BET Awards 2012: Ye Freestyles, D’Angelo Shows Us How It Feels, and Cissy Houston Builds a Bridge Over Troubled Waters

If you didn’t catch the BET Awards show last night, you truly missed out. That’s normally not the sentiment one feels after spending four hours watching the network, but yesterday BET showed that all of the viewers’ graveling over the past few years was well worth it because the folks behind the annual production definitely stepped their game up.

There were a few moments everybody anticipated before last night’s show like D’Angelo hitting the stage and an expected Whitney Houston tribute, but both were better than anyone imagined (although the bar was already set pretty low). Mr. Brown Sugar took us back to his “Untitled” Days, performing “How Does it Feel” and Mariah Carey hit the stage to introduce the Whitney Houston tribute and talk about their friendship, followed by performances from Monica, who took us straight to church, Brandy, Chaka Khan, and Cissy Houston, who amazingly belted out “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” in memory of her daughter.

BET got the Maze and Frankie Beverly tribute right too, with Joe, Tyrese, and Faith Evans singing  a few tunes before the band hit the stage themselves. Kanye also opened up the show with his G.O.O.D Music, “Lamborghini Mercy” crew, Yolanda Adams and Amber Bullock tore up the Gospel Sundays segment, and Chris Brown only lip synched through half of his performance. All in all, this year’s festivities were a major improvement over previous years.

Check out all of the performances from the night right here. Which was your fav?

Swapping Spit: 7 Gag-Worthy Celebrity Kisses

Madonna and Britney really started some mess. Surely, by now, you’ve noticed that in the past few years award shows, performances and just regular celebrity appearances have been plagued with tacky, sloppy kisses. Some of them are spontaneous while others are staged. But just because they’ve been orchestrated, doesn’t mean that they’re easy to stomach. They’re quite gross, actually. Check out the most heinous offenses and let us know if you loathe these celeb kiss as much as we do.

Fantasia and Jamie Foxx

Jamie Foxx and Fantasia performing together sounds like a treat…in theory. Both can sing and always put on a good show; yet they took it way too far with this slimy kiss they shared at the 2006 BET awards. I could have gone with it as a part of the performance had it not been for that string of spit that hung in the air after their lips had parted. Watching the video will make you cover your mouth in mild repulsion.

10 Things That Shouldn’t Be on Next Year’s BET Awards

While there were some really bright spots in last night’s BET Awards, unless I was looking at the wrong channel, the show as a whole was underwhelming.  Some of the performances were dope (we see you Kelly!), others, a tad bit too dry for my liking. There was less opportunities it seemed to give out awards, and when they did, they were saying the wrong winners. But you can only grow from your missteps. So BET, here’s a list of things we’d like you to keep in mind for next year’s show, because seeing them once was enough…

BET Awards: A Guilty Pleasure

I know plenty of black people who are allergic to the BET awards. Like their eyes will burn, their skin will break out in blotches and their throat will close if they watch a telecast of this annual event. They avoid it like the plague because BET has let them down one too many times.  This analysis is about right. You can usually expect a sub par show. These days you don’t know what you’re going to get when you watch.

But for others it’s the guilty pleasure you can’t help but indulge in. I fall in this category. I know it’s not right, but I have to watch just so I won’t be missing a moment of ratchetness, the making of pop cultural history or a musical genius moment. You never know. While there were no history making  moments from last nights show; there was ratchetness of course and even moments of genius as our people met on “our network” to honor the musical accomplishments of our past and present If you missed last night’s show, for whatever reason, check out the highlights and low lights here.

Chris Brown Racks Up at BET Awards

(CNN) — A mix up between a computer tablet and a teleprompter during Sunday’s BET Awards created an awkward moment that reminded viewers of Chris Brown’s domestic violence conviction on a night that otherwise was Brown’s triumph.  The 2011 BET Awards paid nostalgic and emotional tributes to several fallen stars and the living Patti LaBelle, but embattled hip hop singer Chris Brown dominated Sunday night’s show.  Brown, who admitted guilt two years ago to the brutal assault of ex-girlfriend Rihanna, won four trophies and performed twice during the telecast from Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium.  Brown broke down in tears on the same stage during the BET Awards a year ago while performing a tribute to Michael Jackson. Ironically, Rihanna was mistakenly announced as the winner of the Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award near the end of Sunday’s telecast. BET later clarified that Brown was the “viewers choice,” not Rihanna.

Meet Shanell, New Sweetheart of Young Money (VIDEO)

In the anatomy of every Hip-Hop crew there are certain key elements: A CEO/sponsor, who legitimizes the members. A standout MC that has mainstream appeal. A few more MC’s that appeal to true Hip-Hop lovers. Can’t forget to “Queen Bee”, who raps for the ladies. And of course, the singing sweetheart who represents the gentler side of the group. Young Money has all the element as we were reminded  at the BET Awards when they all came up as a group to accept individual awards (took us back to memories of the Rough Riders at the Source Awards).

Songwriters Are the Unsung Heroes

June 30th, 2010 - By TheEditor

(The Fresh Xpress) — This past weekend was the BET Awards weekend and everybody was in a frenzy about what artists will win what category. This is was also the same weekend as the ASCAP awards. In case you’re not aware, ASCAP stands for The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). So it’s like the official association for songwriters. Many times you find yourself singing a song on the radio that’s a total banger, but you come up on a #epicfail when you can’t name who penned it. That’s kinda a subliminal shot for you to stop stealing music. When you buy the CD, you can go through the liner notes and find out who wrote your favorite song. It might surprise you on some records who penned what.
