TIME magazine points out that this is just “speculation.” The only possible source is this International Business Times story that has links to a Chinese website featuring pictures of the yet-to-be released phone next to some numbers. Otherwise, reporters are just randomly searching “Apple,” iPhone,” and the number “8″ or “800″ to try and get to the bottom of it.
“If there’s a grain of truth to it, $800 is almost certainly the price of one of the models of phones when purchased without a contract. If any carrier tried to sell the new iPhone for $800 with a two-year contract, nobody would buy it,” writes Doug Aamoth. It would be a huge departure from the previous iPhone model, which came to market at $399. Although, Aamoth says, you never know with Apple. But seriously, no.
To his point, if you were to buy a fancy smartphone without a contract, the price would be considerably higher that what you probably paid once the phone company put you on lockdown for the next couple of years. So take care of your device or, literally, pay the price.
So a reminder: Sometimes you have to ignore the Internets. It looks like Apple will have some iPhone news to announce on September 12. Knowing how tight-lipped Apple notoriously is, that will likely be the time when we get the true story about design, features, and pricing.
In the meantime, feel free to check out those streams for some serious laughs at what people would need their phone to do if they were to pay that crazy price. Personal favorite: ”
