Silver Sparrow

Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

This critically acclaimed work has received rave reviews from O Magazine, Essence, and the LA Times. This story takes place in middle-class Atlanta in the 1980s and centers on two little girls who share the same father, but live in two different worlds. The girls’ father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist who has two families: a public one and a private one. Dana knows her dad has another family and struggles to deal with feeling second-best. Bunny doesn’t know her father has another daughter and is unknowingly living a lie. The girls meet and become friends. When their worlds collide, secrets are revealed and illusions are shattered. Beautifully written and explosive, Silver Sparrow is the perfect present for the book-lover in your family.

Midnight & the Meaning of Love. Sister Souljah. Great book. The Kid by Sapphire. The sequel to PUSH. Very distrubing.

I read Woman Vs Womaniser, What he knows, What you don’t.  I could not put the book down the writing style is so refreshing.  Very powerful and educational read.

3 of these books are in my collection and I am intrigued for some reason to read Perfect Peace. Other book I’d recommend is one I got recently, Making Friends with Black People by Nick Adams, Ghettonation by Cora Daniels and Who’s Afraid of Post-Blackness by Touré.

I also think “The Deal the Dance and the Devil” by Victoria Christopher Murray should be added to the list…

I read Perfect Peace and it was a GREAT, but DISTURBING read. I could not put the book down. Also, read Fifth Born by Zelda Lockhart.

I adore black contemporary literature (and historical works too).  I can only imagine how disturbing “Perfect” is.  Thanks for the suggestion to read ”Fifth Born,” it sounds like a compelling story.  I’m also interested in ”32 Candles”  Hopefully I can make time over the holidays to read a good book (or three).
