Official Trailer For “She’s Gotta Have It” Features A Lot More Than Nola Darling’s Love Quadrangle
Back in July, Netflix released a sneak peek into its upcoming series, She’s Gotta Have It. While it was visually delicious, which is to be expected from a Spike Lee project, the acting we were given a preview of? Not so much, honestly. Some of it felt forced and had some wondering if a series based on the director’s very first feature film, which is beloved, was going to be a good idea after all.
But the good news is the new full-length trailer is getting people excited again.
The preview only introduced us to Nola Darling’s three suitors. However, the official Netflix trailer introduces us to everybody, including to Darling herself, her therapist, her friends and what we can expect in her struggles trying to balance her career aspirations with being a “sex positive, poly-amorous, pansexual” ducking and dodging monogamy.
DeWanda Wise stars as Nola Darling, Cleo Anthony plays Greer Childs, Lyriq Bent is Jamie Overstreet and Anthony Ramos takes over in the role many know Lee for, which is as sneakerhead Mars Blackmon.
As for the Academy Award-nominated director, he is directing this much-anticipated project, as well executive producing it with his wife, Tonya Lewis Lee. As he stated, Tonya was the reason for this update on the groundbreaking 1986 film. It was her idea.
And even though dating is much different than it was when the film debuted, you won’t see Darling struggling with who to swipe left and right on. It seems Lee will be keeping things old-school as he recalls the dating scene during that time.
“There was no swiping and all of that stuff,” he said in a recent chat with Ebony. “We shot the movie in 1985. But Nola Darling doesn’t do that; she’s not doing that. But she still has three men at the same time. She juggles them.”
See how juggling dating prospects works for this character when She’s Gotta Have It debuts on November 23 on Netflix. In the mean time, check out the trailer for yourself.
