Tyrese and Norma Gibson were married from 2007 and 2009, and she’s spoken only in the past (to us actually), about the issues during their marriage, including claims that he was abusive, both verbally and physically. The former couple were also going through a custody dispute over their daughter, Shayla, for some time, though it seemed like maybe things had changed for the better between the two. However, things have actually just turned very ugly, as new court documents obtained by The Blast show that Norma is accusing the actor and singer of physically harming their child.

She claims that on August 19 while the 10-year-old was visiting with her father, he allegedly confronted her about birthday money she took from her piggy bank. From there, she claims “he went into a rage, pushed our daughter to the ground, pinned her face down, put his knees on her back, grabbed her hands with one arm and beat her with the other.” She also says that Shayla told her after the fact that this alleged beating was so rough on her that “it hurts when I sit down.”

Norma said she gave Tyrese a piece of her mind after learning of the incident. Afterward, she filed the court papers to receive an order of protection. The Blast reports that the request has been granted and keeps Tyrese from having contact with Shayla or Norma until the next hearing about the situation on October 2. And on top of that, Norma was granted physical custody of their daughter while Tyrese has been barred from visitation.

And in an interesting tidbit shared through the court paperwork, it seems that Norma is also fearful that her ex might try and take their daughter away, settling in Dubai, which is a place Tyrese often visits and posts about on social media. She claims if he did do that, it would be hard for her to bring their “daughter home from a Muslim country,” especially since she says he has influence with some royals in Dubai and the UAE.

But Tyrese is speaking out about the order of protection and unflattering claims about him, and doing so, of course, in a post on Instagram:

All I wanna do is co/parent nothing else…… Please…. Stick and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt…… There’s someone out here for everybody – Norma I know you can see this, I’m sorry I got re-married, I’m sorry we didn’t work out I’m sorry you haven’t been able to find another man since we separated…… Sometimes you get married and have kids and things just don’t work out, but I have NEVER wished harm on you……. I was hoping by now you got over what we used to be… But I see the attacks just won’t stop so I believe this too will pass and God and the courts will reveal the truth….. I want you to know I still love you and wish you the best in all that you’re looking to do… I just simply wanna co-parent and raise Shayla to be a respectful, decent, smart angel that I know she is… Paint your picture but God knows the truth…… if I was a bad dad I wouldn’t of went from 80/20 to 70/30 to 60/40 to 50/50 custody in my favor…… All of the honorable fathers and parents out here keep fighting the good fight you may embarrassed at times but in the end the kids will always run into the arms of the ones who really has their backs in a great father not because I’m famous with money but because I am – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it…. More truths coming soon……. Child custody family issues are the worst…….

Tyrese and Norma were only married for a short time, but all of these years later, their battles continue. Tyrese, as he pointed out, is newly married. He tied the knot with Samantha Lee in February of this year.

When we talked to Norma in 2015 about how she was explaining all of the negative reports about herself and her ex-husband during their public spat to Shayla, she said she was trying to encourage their daughter to focus her energy on more positive things.

“I explain to her the reality of what media is. You just have to say, ‘The media puts a lot of stories out there. Don’t pay attention,'” she said. “I’ve talked to her about it and have educated her on other stories of people who have negative things in the media. She has an understanding that it’s like watching a movie. It’s not reality and that what we go through in our personal lives only makes us stronger.”
