Over the weekend, Queen Sugar star Rutina Wesley stepped out for PaleyFest in Los Angeles with a striking new ‘do. The actress, who normally wears faux locs for her role as Nova Bordelon on the hit OWN show, swapped out those extensions for a hair full of braids — colorful braids. Nearly every color of the rainbow can be found on Rutina’s head, from pastel shades of pink, purple, and blue to a golden yellow, neon green, and even white.

Immediately, the look, styled by Tallulah Lulu Marcelin, made us think of the bright orange and pink braids Alicia Keys has been rocking this summer and that’s when we realized colorful braids just might be a thing. Not just an AfroPunk, summer festival kind of thing, but a red carpet, here-to-stay-for-a-while trend.

The look is certainly a fun departure from the uniform hairstyles we’ve come to see on celebs when they’re out and about, and we have a feeling these ladies might be attempting to soak of the last few moments of summer with this style that’s most appropriate for the season.

Braids, of course, aren’t the only way to get in on this trend. Earlier this year, Tiny stepped out with two-tone faux locs in beautiful hues of blue and green which made quite a statement.

With Black women barely being able to get away with ‘fros and twist outs in the office, we don’t know how feasible it is for the average working woman to pull off this look. But if you’re squeezing in one last summer vacation you might want to give it a try. Are you feeling the colorful braids movement?
