She Tried It! Le Luxe Beauty Studio And Extensions

September 13, 2017  |

While most of us love that new hair feeling when we leave the salon, few of us actually enjoy the experience while we’re at the shop. You know the complaints: long wait times, lack of professionalism, long wait times… There’s a reason the kitchen beautician movement has caught on so well, but every once and a while a girl wants to be treated like a queen — and not ruin her hair trying to do something she has no business — and I found Le Luxe Studio & Nail Lounge is the perfect place to be treated like a queen by fellow queens.

Located in Brooklyn, NY, Le Luxe was started just one year ago by Millie Lachapell as a place for women to have an upscale beauty experience right in their neighborhood without the overpriced cost that’s typical of New York City salons. The studio offers a variety of services, from braiding, weave installations, and coloring, to nail art, detox treatments, makeup by Mel, and full-service bridal packages — all of which can be booked on the salon’s website (for a 5% discount) which also lists all of their staff and stylists and current specials.

As soon as I stepped in the salon, I was impressed by the ambiance. There was no smell of hair being burned by hot flat irons or a cloud of smoke surrounding customers. The energy was calm; stylists were chatting quietly with their clients, low music was playing in the background, and I sat for just two minutes in the plush purple armchairs in the waiting area before the receptionist introduced me to my stylist for the day, Adama, and I was offered a mimosa while we had a mini-consultation before she began my services.

I should note that I was already impressed with the service of the salon before I stepped one foot on the property. Though I’ve had a weave a few times before, this time I wanted to try a bob with color and I wasn’t really sure how that process would work. Thankfully, I was able to send the studio a photo of the look I was going for, and when I arrived on site, the tracks had already been dyed by their colorist GiGi to replicate the color in the photo I sent and also complement my skin tone — because when you’re attempting to rock blonde tresses that’s important.

When I set in Adama’s chair, she began by assessing my hair’s health, asking when was the last time I’d washed my strands, trimmed my ends, and confirming the services I’d booked. After our brief chat, she explained she was going to wash my hair twice since I’d had some product buildup from the past week and then we’d move forward with the braiding process before my weave install.

Everything went perfectly smooth from wash to dry to braid, thanks to Adama’s gentle touch, and before I knew it, she was beginning the closure installation. Because I’m not a weave connoisseur, Adama walked me through my options regarding my weave, such as choosing to have a cap or not, wanting her to apply oil to my hair prior or post-braiding, and explaining why she uses an elastic band with her closures to keep the track in place no matter how the hair underneath begins to grow out. I appreciated her thoroughness which made me feel much more comfortable about doing something drastically different with my hair.

It didn’t take long for Adama to sew in the tracks which were from the salon’s own custom extensions collection, and after giving me a head full of soft body waves I was on my way out the door.

What I loved most about my experience was how prompt and on point the service was. I’d explained prior to booking that I had an international flight the same evening and needed to be done with everything by 8 pm. By 7:53 pm, the staff and I were snapping pictures and gushing over the finished product, which was, honestly, one of only a handful of times I’ve left a salon with exactly the look I wanted.

Even though I live in Harlem, I will definitely make the journey back to Brooklyn to experience more of the services at Le Luxe Studio (which, if you’re not from New York, is like saying you’d travel an hour to have your hair done by someone you trust). I left the studio feeling glamorous which is exactly what I wanted for my luxury vacay in Monaco. Details on that trip coming soon!
