Earlier this year, around Valentine’s Day to be specific, the Internet learned that Rosario Dawson was dating comedian Eric Andre and pretty much lost it’s sh-t. As culture editor Veronica Wells put it while sharing the news with our readers, “You know Rosario Dawson is considered a sex symbol so people didn’t exactly put her with Andre, a gangly comedian with a misshapen afro. But it is so.”

And not only are they still going strong, but according to a story shared by Dawson on her Instagram this week, the pair have actually been an item for quite some time. The 38-year-old actress revealed that a year ago around this exact time, she’d had an emergency surgery for a ruptured cyst on her ovary. She said it was the encouragement of her man that helped her get through it all and that going through that ordeal made her realize how important the prankster was to her, so it was the first time she said “I love you” to him.
She shared this story while speaking on the value of life and how distressing times remind you of “who and what is important.” She also did so while making mention of recent political and social issues, as well as the death of her cousin Vaneza earlier this year. The 26-year-old was found dead in Dawson’s home and died of natural causes:

So despite what people might think of their relationship with Andre, Dawson is clear on the fact that it is a relationship of true value to her. As she told Stephen Colbert, she realized he was a real one when he cared for her after the surgery when she was, well, in quite the vulnerable and maybe a little bit embarrassing of a state.
“He took care of me in an adult diaper,” she said. “That is love.”
