Our Favorite ‘Round The Way Girls
It’s hard not to change when you go from scraping pennies together to get by to making millions of dollars doing what you love, but we have a special place in our hearts for women who don’t let their bank accounts change who they are at their core.
Of course as their names get bigger, these women listed here keep evolving and getting better. But whether they’re rocking bloody shoes or Jordans, these famous ladies still know how to kick back, two-step — or C-walk — with the rest of us, and have a good time like one of the girls. No matter how much fame they achieve, you’ll never catch these stars’ noses in the air, which is why we’ve officially deemed them our favorite ’round the way girls.
Cardi B. is the epitome of a woman who knows how to play the game. She used Love & Hip-Hop to build a fan base, then used the fame the reality show brought her to springboard her own career. Leaving the petty behind proved to be the right move, as Cardi currently has the hottest track on the Billboard charts and that’s landed her a spot performing on the MTV VMA pre-show this year and many other stages. And yet, she can still goof around like this when she gets in front of the camera.
Mary J. Blige
Is there any other woman on earth who has so perfectly shared in our pain with her music and our resilience with her dance moves on stage? There isn’t a woman around who doesn’t have nothing but love for Mary.
Tiffany Haddish is new to Hollywood and feels absolutely no way about it. During her press run promoting Girls Trip, the comedic actress was as funny off screen as she was in the box office hit, which is why we’re all waiting to see what’s next — and hoping it’s something big.
Taraji P. Henson
Taraji is an A-list star with the type of down to earth “Hey sis” personality that fans have loved since her Baby Boy days. You can’t help but want to see her keep winning.
Her name might be Queen but nobody feels like a pauper when Queen Latifah’s around. With a career spanning decades, and ventures in every arena from acting to producing to hosting a TV show and having her own line of cosmetics with Cover Girl, it’s amazing how this multi-talented beauty is just Dana to everyone around her.
Even with all of her career accomplishments — and a billionaire husband — Eve still walks around like the pitbull in a skirt we first met and fell in love with in the late ’90s.
Keyshia Cole became our generation’s Mary J. Blige, a woman who keeps it real when it comes to her pain and heartbreak, which is why we so desperately want her to win by any means possible.
Solange may not be the first woman that comes to mind when you think of a ’round the way girl, but no one has so perfectly summed up the Black woman’s experience in our current era as perfectly as she has. She might live the good life, but she’s extremely in tune with the realities many of us face.
Tiny’s been in the game since a teenager but she never lost the down-home charm or country twang that first captivated audiences with Xscape, and we’ve loved watching her come into her own and make tough choices when it comes to her family.
