Earlier this month, we learned that Angela Thomas’ debut, best-selling novel The Hate U Give was being adapted into a film, starring Amandla Stenberg. We reported that Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby would play her parents.

Now we’ve learned of additional cast members. According to Variety, Algee Smith, who portrayed Ralph in the New Edition biopic and starred in the recently released Detroit, is joining the cast along with Lamar Johnson and Common.

Issa Rae will portray April, the activist who helps Starr, played by Amandla Stenberg, find her voice.

The Hate U Give is about the 16-year-old girl who witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend. Living in an impoverished neighborhood but attending a suburban prep school, she’s torn between two worlds and has to find a way to speak up and out, in those differing communities.
