“Celebrate Your Unique Beauty”: Model Winnie Harlow Strips Down To Celebrate Body Positivity
Despite growing up with people giving her constant grief about her vitiligo, model Winnie Harlow is now more than comfortable with her skin.
She’s showed it off quite a bit since stepping into the spotlight in 2014 as a contestant on America’s Next Top Model. The beauty has modeled for Desigual, Diesel and Swarovski, been in the pages of i-D, Glamour, Ebony and Vogue Italia, and last year she was featured in Beyoncé’s Lemonade visual album. But outside of work, she stripped down to her underwear to show off her skin and make a statement about body positivity. She encouraged her followers not to seek validation from others to love the skin you’re in.
“The real difference isn’t my skin. It’s the fact that I don’t find my beauty in the opinions of others,” the 23-year-old wrote on Instagram. “I’m beautiful because I know it. Celebrate Your unique beauty today (& everyday)!”
Harlow has been outspoken since she gained fame about vitiligo and body positivity. She did a TED presentation about it, spoken on panels and was even given an award for being a role model at Portuguese GQ‘s Men of the Year event in 2015. Despite all of that, and stripping down for the ‘gram this week, Harlow did recently admit when asked about her biggest regret by Grazia magazine that if she could, she would like to talk about more than the story behind her skin, because she has a lot more to offer and speak on.
“Not sharing all of my story, and letting the media create my story for me. I’m so much more than my skin, but that’s what I’m always asked about, so I answer, and the cycle continues.”
