New ‘Do, Who Dis? Stars Who Completely Switched Up Their Signature Hairstyles This Year
There are some famous women who are hair chameleons and love to rock drastically different looks seven days a week, and then there are other stars who are simply known by their staple hairstyle. For Whoopi it’s her locks, Beyonce has her long blonde waves, and Tamron Hall has her crop cut.
The women on this list once had signature hair looks too, but this year they all threw caution to the wind and decided to do something different. From grey to goldilocks and big chops, here are nine women who completely switched up their hairstyles in 2017.
Taraji P. Henson
Taraji traded in her signature straight bob for a cropped natural cut this summer and she’s never looked better. Hairstylist Tym Wallace said when Taraji made the transition, she “felt so free and liberated.”
Keke had slowly become quite the hair chameleon, switching between wigs, weaves, braids, and extensions of all hues on a regular, but no one expected the singer and actress to cut off all her locks. That’s exactly what she did this spring when she transitioned to a fade and immediately began rocking it in all shades, from pink to purple.
Keke said of her choice to chop, “I wanted to start over. My texture has changed quite a bit over the years from all the things I’ve done to it. I really want to be able to let my hair rest and become its own thing. I also really wanted to be bald!”
Halle and her pixie cut have been virtually inseparable since we first knew who the actress was, but this year the mother of two decided to let her length shine through. Why? Because her hair is on fleek.
Gabby may still love a sleek bob and weaves down her back from time to time, but this year she also started rocking her natural coils in public for the first time and she looked absolutely stunning.
It’s hard to remember a time when Essence wasn’t proudly rocking her natural waves and curls or a sleek ‘do of some sort for a role, but this year she completely switched things up, hopping on the faux locs trend to mark her 45th birthday. We must say they suit her nicely.
Alicia has been doing all sorts of new things when it comes to beauty over the past year, but certainly the most radical has been these orange, pink, and black braids she’s been donning for the summer just ‘cuz.
GREY// I should've started this #hairjourney… really #mejourney a year and half ago when it began. That time back in March 2016 when my grey resisted my last color of February 2016 for award season… But I wasn't sure I would stay committed. Actually I wasn't sure I was on the journey yet, but I did make a decision then that I would go #natural through the end of #summer2016 to save #time and #thought and #money. But at the end of the summer I decided to keep going. I believe my friend @iamrebeccawalker inspired me at this time. I saw the image of her allowing her grey and I thought she was #beautiful and #brave… I still wasn't sure but I also wasn't making appointments to get it colored. Plus I was writing/developing new projects… I'll decide before I start doing press again with the sell of new shows… then we sold the shows and I was starting to do #panels #redcarpets but I didn't make the appointment… I gave myself until my birthday in May to decide. And ultimately I decided to allow my grey. I mostly love it! There are still days I'm not sure… but that's just it, whether it's #Hair or #JustMe my journey has lead me to love it and except the moments of being unsure. That's tantamount to #lettinggo #doingme… until I decide to do something else! #InTheLandOfGettingGrownAndGoingGrey
Mara Brock Akil
The director and producer is still rocking her signature curls, but now just with a little more color, grey to be exact. After turning 47 in May, Mara decided she would allow her hair to keep greying rather than color it, writing on Instagram:
“There are still days I’m not sure… but that’s just it, whether it’s #Hair or #JustMe my journey has lead me to love it and except the moments of being unsure. That’s tantamount to #lettinggo #doingme… until I decide to do something else!”
Whether short or long, colorful curls are what we know Kelis for. But now that the singer has taken a liking to twists, she, of course, can’t just rock any old twists. Nope, twists fit for a queen are all that will do for her which is why she pulled off this Cleopatra look so perfectly.
Zoe’s blonde locs came to be as signature to her look as her mother’s long locs back in the day, but in April the budding actress chopped them all off in favor of a platinum pixie cut that suits her just as nicely.
