Kelly Rowland’s Belated Mother’s Day Note A Reminder It’s Never Easy Celebrating Without Your Mom
A few weeks after giving birth to her first child, son Titan, Kelly Rowland lost her mother, Doris Rowland Garrison, at the age of 66. At the time, she issued a statement through her publicist, speaking on the impact her mom’s love had on the mother she was becoming.
“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Doris Rowland Garrison,” part of her statement read. “She was an incredible soul who made countless sacrifices so that I could become the woman—and now mother—I am today.”
She hasn’t spoken that much since then about her mother, as it’s understandably tough for the 36-year-old. But on Monday, a day after Mother’s Day, Rowland celebrated both her late mother and grandmother with a heartfelt message and memory. She shared it on Instagram:
If I stopped for even one moment yesterday, it would've been the moment I thought about you and I would've lost it. Today, I let some fall cause I simply miss you! Mothers' Day was always fun! This one was one of our best memories! You, Gran-Gran, @lala,@csurillo, and myself all out on the boat chillin! I will never forget that day! Not a day goes by that I don't think about you! I love you Momma! I love you a bushel and a peck! I❤UMomma! I❤UGranGran!
Doris Rowland Garrison died in 2014 after going into cardiac arrest. In an interview with 60 Minutes earlier this year while promoting her new parenting book, Whoa, Baby!: A Guide for New Moms Who Feel Overwhelmed and Freaked Out (and Wonder What the #*$& Just Happened), she talked about the day her mom passed.
“It was hard because I’d just watched my son come into this world and I actually watched her go. Like, literally watched her go. I remember when they pulled the plug,” Rowland said before breaking down.
“There’s not a day that goes by I don’t think of her,” she added.
