Forest Whitaker To Produce New Angela Davis Biopic
In this day in age, when Resistance has got to be a way of life for any conscious person in America, we need to be reminded of the men and women who’ve laid the groundwork.
There are several examples of these type of people, but one from our more recent history is Angela Davis. After being framed by the FBI, Davis represented herself, stood up to an oppressive government and won. The next generation needs to known about her fight in order to know it’s possible but to also stay encouraged.
That’s why I was thrilled to learn that actor and director Forest Whitaker has signed on to produce a new Angela Davis biopic, based on Davis’ own book, Angela Davis: An Autobiography.
Whitaker’s involvement in the film should perhaps come as no surprise considering he grew up in Compton, California during the height of the Black Panther Party’s community involvement.
“My memory of the Panthers, for instance, is very different from most people’s because as a kid I remember them on my street, and how nice they treated me. Free breakfast program, free schools, outreach and community work, gang members working hand in hand, Crips and Bloods.”
Other producers for the project include Davis herself, Nina Yang Bongiovi, who worked on Fruitvale Station,
Codeblack Enterprises CEO Jeff Clanagan, and Sidra Smith, who served as a producer on the 2012 documentary Free Angela and All Political Prisoners.
